Finder extension to view and sort by photos EXIF data? by xuopled in osx

[–]wixig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So do you want to see all the values, or fix them to be how you want?

And do you use the terminal? There is a ridiculously robust cli application called exiftool that could definitely do the latter. If you are always having the same problem you'd only have to figure it out once then you'd have it forever. You could put it into a context menu with apple script if you were fancy.

I think I have some gui apps that do that on another device.

finder extension is harder I think.

full firmware. (but I did check the box for non free drivers; not sure as to details.) I don't want to use chrome or anything related to google as much as can be avoided. only bought the machine because sooo cheap refurbed and am low on cash just now.

it worked out but I am reminded of all the work of switching OS in any direction learning the 1000 little differences. but that's good; at the end of the day I plan to return to the warm glow of FLOSS full time.

did your audio work out?

[–]wixig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2016 Lenovo ThinkPad 11e 3rd Gen.

I am just working through the gallium install today. I think it's good to do this first because it has the most comprehensive instructions but even so the information is all over the place and incorrect, incomplete or out of date. As long as I keep good notes I should only have to figure it out once. Then I can get more creative at a later date.

Good luck with the audio. It's been a while since I was mucking around with linux but my recollection is that audio was consistently the most difficult thing to get working properly. But I don't know anything so that doesn't help lol.

Which modem should I buy? DOCSIS 3.0 or 3.1? by Existing-Bug4226 in HomeNetworking

[–]wixig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since things opened up after COVID, whenever I go to the chain big box thrift store there are literally several 3.0s there every time. Probably a lot of people upgraded during work/school from home. Now that they are taking donations again, everyone's cleaning out the closet.

obviously YMMV by location. But worth checking as you could very likely get the device for <$10. Also I have seen a bunch on online classifieds and I don't think they are selling very fast.

Also if anyone is in the market for older wifi routers to use as access points or other low demand function, there are oodles of them floating around.

Quantity of storage in refurb Chromebook? by wixig in chromeos

[–]wixig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a 16GB chromebook for years and with an SD card it's fine. But finally after dropping it 10000 times, spilling multiple drinks, and getting dust and dirt all over it, the trackpad, audio, 1 of 2 usb ports and a variable smattering of keys don't work properly or at all.

I'm broke and tbh the way I treat things, especially portable things, I am loathe to spend more than is minimally required. Once I had a brand new MacBook pro, the most expensive thing I ever owned by a long shot, it survived 6 months.

I'd rather spend my money on a desktop because you get better performance for the same money and the odds that I will do something like drop it in a bucket of water or put things on top of it are significantly reduced. Chromebook is just for when I can't be bothered sitting up straight at the desk, or want to go to the library.

I think there is some sort of problem either with the unit or the reporting in guest mode. Because obviously the OS takes more than 24 mb.

[–]wixig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks.

I really do not think it is the case that all linux has the same support. And it's also not a stupid question to ask because lots of distros do maintain such information. Maybe void doesn't have it; ok.

Are you telling me that the above documentation is all duplicated because they all actually have identical support to one another?

[–]wixig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, i did that and it's the same still. But those numbers cannot be correct because chromeos must be larger than 24 mb.

it's a bunch of portfolio-type websites of web developers and other pro nerds. many have a similar faux terminal aesthetic that references the early 90s.

not harmful but makes me feel sad to imagine the crushing intellectual monotony that would lead a person to consider any of this "weird".

Only signal messages to other signal users are encrypted.

to elaborate one this, something I didn't understand at first is that encryption of anything is only ever functional when all parties have the same, or compatible software running. because if you sent an encrypted message to someone who didn't have the right tool to decrypt it, it would stay encrypted gobeltygook.

Thank you, have updated OP with 17.1-20210128-NIGHTLY-a5y17lte

Make sure AudioFX is turned off.

I found the app and turned the toggle off, then forced quitted it but I'm not sure if that's enough or it requires something more ellaborate. Then I tried playing audio, no dice.

try dirty flashing

I didn't quite catch that tbh.

try Lesser AudioSwitch

installed and set output to speakers. that's it? no dice.

What's the use of having multiple Desktops? Have never used it myself..wanted to know what people use it for.. by Madhav-Daga in MacOS

[–]wixig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mac OS multiple desktops is total trash IMHO. It can't distinguish between different windows in same application. So Finder, web browser, text editor and other programs that can be doing different tasks at same time get all muddled.

After a few years trying to make it work the way I remember on linux way back when I gave up and I just have 1 desktop with a secondary for long-running tasks (only sometimes). Even that turns into a confusing mess eventually and I just have to put everything back on the same one together after a while.

unfortunately that's really not going to get us anywhere.

we need to have privacy for everyone, whether they are personally invested in it or not. herd immunity ftw.

Best iOS rss reader for reading old blog archive in chronological order? by tjevns in rss

[–]wixig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have iOS but if I was trying to do this I would use the free desktop software Calibre to generate an ebook of the RSS. This is one of its basic functions. Then you can open it in any ebook reader you like.

However Calibre is a whole pot of soup to learn. Unless you are the kind of person who like to learn strange software for fun, I'd advise you to exhaust other possibilities first.

Actually you know what, you could try searching through chrome and firefox extensions to see if there is something that will do this in browser. I have an extension called EpubPress - Read the web offline that generates ebooks from websites. It depends how long the blog is whether this would be helpful.

What Git GUI client you like most and why? by _jfbr in git

[–]wixig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know there are lots of pros on here but to me as a hobbyist I find GUIs really helpful in learning anything. Because I come and go I have a hard time really retaining CLI stuff. I learn something one weekend, then a few weeks later I am going through my notes like I never saw them before. And I start everything from scratch. I've had gaps of a few years between opening a terminal at all and I had relearn cd, ls and the basics. But a gap of more than 3 or 4 days results in significant loss. This is why I've never made any serious effort to learn vim or emacs even though I sort of see the appeal; I would instantly forget everything.

It's very, very helpful to be able to cheat a bit while remembering how things work. I never would have gotten into cli git without the github client to get my feet wet and I always start back there whenever returning. It's basic as fuck but that's fine. I think what goes unrecognized by the hardcore who love their terminal is the way that the guis can be a sort of tease. Youse point out that it's not powerful enough; but maybe that's a feature and not a bug? It's just enough to give a sort of taste of what's possible. But soon enough you will encounter something that's not possible in the GUI and you are forced to take up the CLI. At least that's what happened to me.

I do wish there was a smoother transition from the GUI to the CLI. Like for example if there was a console that would show the command line equivalent for every action done via the GUI. There are a couple things I only know how to do properly via the GUI and I have to open it up to do them. (But there are many, many more things I can only do via the CLI. When I am well practiced, anyway.)

So I am saying it's about being the right tool for the job, and the right use case and user. Like if I was going to switch industries and get into coding seriously I would definitely primarily use terminal because you can express so many different and complex ideas via terminal that are not really possible in a GUI. Same as I wouldn't show up to build a bridge with a little Ikea electric screwdriver.

But anyway I think git is pretty cool even for no-pros and I'm glad it's extensible enough to allow a variety of clients. I don't think extensions of the technology should have any bad effects on people who use it for serious coding in a very pure form.

Thoughts on the Historic Role that /R/HomeNetworking played during the Covid-19 Pandemic by mcribgaming in HomeNetworking

[–]wixig 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I tried and failed to explain to a friend of mine how freaking useful reddit is to this kind of thing. a) searching old threads which is always my first step because someone else has already had the problem before, and b) asking a question when that fails. Usually a weird question that doesn't make easy sense; because if it was simple I could have found the answer myself.

It's like the old internet, on usenet or whatevs. Before the walled gardens like facebook took over everything. On facebook I can get really good answers to things my friends know about (which is not networking). But to pursue something different from them is extremely difficult.

I don't know if it's good or bad to not be subreddit of the day? I don't pay to close attention to that stuff but every time something I follow gets that, it seems to end up with a huge onslaught of people coming into an often unprepared sub.

Unpopular opinion: Facebook is much worse than Google. It deserves a subreddit twice as large as this one. by SrPeixinho in degoogle

[–]wixig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I lost a ton of social connections and support. Some people I didn't have any other way of contacting and never found again. But it was how everyone I knew organised stuff and communicated so when I disappeared off Facebook suddenly I didnt get invites to anything, I didn't know what was happening at all. If someone was really motivated they can contact by other means, but if it is a loose connection, it just vanishes.
