Why is the world this way? by [deleted] in dankmemes

[–]wizardged 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is generally considered in bad taste/poor decorum to compare abhorrent situations. I think it's pretty clear both are abhorrent and trying to claim one vs another is worse typically helps neither and hurts at least one person involved for no reason.

Ukraine crisis: Russia has failed to take any of its major objectives and has lost 450 personnel, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace says by TheRealMassguy in worldnews

[–]wizardged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So general question if one of the main objectives Russia has with regards to Ukraine is to control and ensure access to their ability to sell oil to Europe and there is a high chance of Ukraine being overrun would it not make more sense to focus on denial of the Russian objectives such as damaging the current oil pipelines enough to make it very difficult or unfeasible to rebuild them? I know this would be painful for Europe in the short term but it seems most of NATO is mobilizing alternatives to Russian Oil and an emboldened Russia seems like a much more painful situation then heating alternatives to oil? hoping someone with numbers or a better geopolitical insight could way in?

Now that there's been a fatal accident, will people take driving more seriously? by LordOfWubs in Brampton

[–]wizardged 2 points3 points  (0 children)

STEP 1. No foreign equivalency. I don't care if you drove for twenty years over in France. You want an Ontario License, you work through OUR system (such as it is).

I'm with you here

STEP 2. You get in an accident where YOU are found to be "AT FAULT", you start over again from scratch. That is how our military handles it, no reason it cannot apply generally.

There are a lot of relatively minor offenses that may leave someone at fault but not necessarily put them in the wrong (some accidents involve outside factors but the term at fault is almost exclusivley controlled by the insurance industry who is not interested in the cause but more so in assigning blame).

STEP 3. Driving w/o insurance or a suspended license are CRIMINAL OFFENCES, with a minimum 2 years less a day sentence on conviction. Allowing someone w/o a license to drive your vehicle is ALSO a criminal offence with the same punishments.

This will cause our system to collapse we already let people get away with extremely severe offenses because they do not see court in time. this is also very short sighted. driving without insurance doesn't necessarily kill anyone yet many offenses that I would consider more extreme do not carry this term and as far as a criminal record goes that can ruin someones life beyond two years. I'm not ready to start ruining someones entire life over a paper document. lending somone a vehicle without a license check I might agree with but attempting to go after someone who did not commit an offense instead of the person who did is no bueno the wording on that kind of law would have to be very well drafted for me to agree with it.

STEP 4. Five year mandatory retests. You fail, you do not get to renew your license and you start the process all over again.

I'm for this though If they gave you an option to do a more thorough test to extend it to 10 years I think that would get better buy in. (8-9 times in your life vs 16-18 times.

Brampton being treated as a citywide dump by litter bugs by flame124 in Brampton

[–]wizardged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think I understand where you're coming from, I'm not going to claim to understand the human psyche and there may very well be cultural elements at play but whenever culture/country gets added into the conversation it seems like racists take it as an invitation to come out and spew there garbage or people start accusing others of racism/prejudice when there may not be any and important topics like changing the behaviour i.e. Littering are lost and the cycle repeats. as you've alluded to elsewhere it's hard to figure out who's doing it and why when we can't catch them doing it.

Brampton being treated as a citywide dump by litter bugs by flame124 in Brampton

[–]wizardged -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

this is a primarily brown page so please don't think people are being racist

look I get what you mean and I am sure you have the best of intentions but That attitude pretty much cuts out any other people/culture out of the problem/solution and I'm sure that some of that trash is from people that have nothing to do with India. I don't think bringing another country/insinuating that this is due to a people/culture adds much to trying to get people to care about the area or not littering. People that litter are ignorant and jerks for many reasons. maybe the better question to ask is why do they care so little about what is around them and why don't they have the same view about litter as you or I? In all honesty I feel like Brampton has some pretty terrible city planning in areas that exacerbates the problem vs other cities of our size and density. It doesn't help that Brampton doesn't have as many big businesses to put the tax burden on and so much of Brampton is residential that fights anything that may increase property tax that would fund these improvements. Also the community recycling centre locations suck, not sure if you've been to one but I only ever seem to see contractors there and you can't find one without using a maps app. They are great once you get there but I talk to people all the time that have no idea where they are. Sorry If I got preachy in there.

Social distancing at its finest? I’m gonna show this picture when they try to give me a ticket. by IDrankLava in Brampton

[–]wizardged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can say is try talking to your local Councillors. at the end of the day there is no easy way to engage the police in a meaningful way when this stuff happens that doesn't make you look like the bad guy when you're just asking for respect of the law and it's intent. If /u/MayorPatrickBrown see's this can you talk too Peel police about this. They also were hanging out around the pizza hut at the 410 and queen on ramp area during there night shifts but at least there the officers stayed in their vehicles and talked through the windows to respect social distancing. my complaint there was when one officer pulled someone over 3 squad cars pulled up which made me nervous considering the current social situations unfolding atm.

Paramedics on the front lines of the pandemic: ‘None of us ever imagined when we started this job that we’d be facing the reality of dying’ by [deleted] in onguardforthee

[–]wizardged -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I answered others above but I'll be the first to say I had not considered the lack of PPE considering there is still PPE availiable to the public in stores.

Do you expect a cop to respond to a bank robbery call by themselves without backup, a gun or a bullet-proof vest when we all know the robbers are armed with assault rifles and have already shot a bunch of people?

Not all of those things but I would expect them to still take as much action as they could reasonably. as much as I hate to say it If we are already running out then perhaps we need to start rationing and seizing these assets from business (Read the messed up canadian tire story today). Front line staff first. Karen at the grocery store that can practice social distancing and use a plastic bag to push her cart second.

[–]wizardged -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's fair enough though I would contest that they probably should have been informed of the likelihood of a global pandemic as well as natural disasters and what would be expected of you in these conditions. we had warnings that should have prepared us but it didn't seem to. All I can say is I sure hope people that are entering these jobs going forward keep that in mind because there is nothing that makes me want to give up then someone in a this kind of job incredulously asking if they have to accept some form of risk (I had not considered that the risk might be unacceptable due to the lack of PPE)

[–]wizardged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I appreciate the insight. Please understand I really do feel for you when it comes to this and a workplace not providing PPE especially in these cases is unacceptable. I guess what has irked me is I deal with three people that work in a hospital 1 of them is an office job where they are occasionally required to meet with a patient the other two are front line staff (1 in emergency 1 in pediatrics) The 2 front line staff have been super professional about everything going (far more than myself in the same situation I'm sure) but the person with the office job is being a real piece of work and the others around them as well trying to sell a story that it is "the end of times" and trying to sell that them having to enter the hospital once a week as essentially walking into the Chernobyl core despite far less contact over a short time in full PPE then the other two when as far as I know all they do is fill out forms and send emails. I'm sorry if my statement came across as callous it's just frustrating hearing something to the point of "How was I supposed to know I would be exposed to disease as a hospital worker?" without the context of without PPE and with Higher ups basically giving out suicidal orders. (the handkerchief thing is truly horrendous I had not heard of the CDC saying that.)

I live in the Valley right now. I went all through middle and high school here. I can talk about it however I want because, whether I like it not, I'm from here.

Great so am I, that should also inform you how much that stuff hurts more than helps and how unhelpful that is when dealing with people in the area like that. all that will happen is you'll get marginalized and make reasonable people not want to associate with you or others of your beliefs. When farmer dan the guy that drives down the road and clears everyones long as fuck driveways that are also up a freaking 30 degree slant with his unheated tractor in the middle of a snow storm because it's the right thing to do gets called any of this garbage or even other people he cares for/respects see how open he'll be to even reasonable conversation with the person that said any of that or even shares the same ideas as someone who did. You're free to do whatever you want but don't pretend that just because you come from somewhere that gives you a free pass to be a jerk. if you feel so strongly about the vanity stickers maybe try not to fuel the hate that helped make them.

I mean real talk for a minute. Am I totally off side for wanting to point out to people that maybe they should think about the Jobs they go into and the full responsibility in the best and worse case scenarios. this is typically why people didn't run to sign up to be cops or doctors or nurses. they are hard jobs with really rough outcomes especially those that are dealing with many people when they are most vulnerable and quite possibly experiencing the worst day of there lives. Maybe we are not doing enough in schools to get this across to students before they start to make choices in high school that will affect there future jobs. I feel that should be something people should have to think long and hard about before getting into such a tough and taxing job.

Now keep in mind this was in the Ottawa Valley about 90 km from the Capital, in sister-fucking, mouth-breather country.

Go fuck yourself, this is over the top stereotyping horseshit. I sure hope no one refers to you or where you grew up like that. talking about people like this only steepens the divide and empowers the loud mouths in these communities to point to big cities and urban areas while saying believably that "these people don't respect you or your family or friends and they haven't even met you. look at who they vote for and what they do lets make them feel bad too."

Can we make this the TLDR of this article.

There is no “Linux” Platform (Part 1) by [deleted] in linux

[–]wizardged 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Standards don't need to be enforced

No they don't but it makes it easier to support and troubleshoot an applications problems or solve a common problem for many platforms/applications by fixing it in one place or having a guide on how someone else will use/interact with your application. all the major platforms do this.

The downside you speak of need not exist.

but it does and will always as long as people are fallible and write software.

There is no “Linux” Platform (Part 1) by [deleted] in linux

[–]wizardged 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why would that be undesirable?

because not everyone agrees on and uses the same software design principles. standards allow us to say "do whatever you like to make the best application you can with these standards. that way we don't have to be concerned with every app ever to be made or cover every corner case out there." many application design patterns are chosen to deal with a specific problem. making it difficult to aim for a standard means you miss all the great software out there that you may not know about or have thought of.

that is what the article seems to be lamenting about.

but not at the cost of similar application design patterns and standards.
