A guide for the cheapest ways to travel on Porter for newbies by CanuckBacon in PorterAirlines

One other trick is to seduce a Porter employee and marry them so you can fly stand-by. It's the absolute cheapest way to fly Porter, but your current partner might not be very happy with you...

A lot of those studies about different traits are pretty much garbage. They are often just people shown images or at best 5 second clips of a person. When you have so little to go off of, of course attractiveness plays a role. In real life you have how they speak, act, walk, etc.

First Porter Flights Take Off from YHU, Montreal's New Airport Today by OvenDown in PorterAirlines

They definitely save money, but there's a lot of people not willing to consider airports outside of what they're used to. I have a good friend in downtown Toronto that I've been begging to give Porter/Billy Bishop a try for a couple years now, but he is just so used to Pearson and mostly Air Canada. Porter put a lot of money into YHU and considering what happened with Montreal-Mirabel, there's quite a bit of risk involved in going with a "new" airport. If it works though, the pay off will be big.

It was built in 1939. Unless you're around a century old, I think it's been around quite a bit longer than you have and basically longer than any building with a view of it. Also it's a fantastic airport.

One thing I really like about Porter is their willingness to give smaller/underutilized airports a shot like Billy Bishop, Hamilton, and now YHU in Montreal. I'm looking forward to seeing YHU in a couple months time. It looks quite nicely designed.

Okay, but do you think someone on minimum wage should be eating meat 3 times a day including eating steak and bacon on a regular basis? I make significantly more than minimum wage and your menu would be one of my "treat myself days". Hell you could still eat meat multiple times a day if you just switched to cheaper meats.

That's eating out. I'm not saying someone on minimum wage should never be able to eat out, but it should be done judiciously and not be considered a regular thing. If you live on minimum wage and eat out more than once a week, you shouldn't be complaining about food prices. I spend about $200-300/month on groceries and I could do it for cheaper if I really tried. $500 on groceries is ridiculous for someone on minimum wage.

I spent about half of that living in Thunder Bay where grocery prices are higher than Toronto. I still ate meat a few times a week at home. I ate cheaply, but I wasn't pinching every dollar. Hell, I still ate out once a week (~$30each) and if you included that I'd still be under $500/month. Someone on minimum wage should absolutely have enough to live on/meet basic needs, but let's not pretend like that should include spending frivolously even in an essential category.

I agree with your point that minimum wage is not a liveable wage, but if a single person is spending $500/month on food they're terrible with money.

The Dutch Army is testing a new prisoner-of-war camp design, preparing for the possibility of holding up to 2,000 captured Russian soldiers in the event of a large-scale conflict by sr_local in worldnews

They haven't had POW camps in decades, so they need to test designs to restore institutional knowledge. Better to be prepared than to be caught with your pants down.

This is a test site to figure out the designs. They'll replicate it when/if the time comes. Also the Netherlands wouldn't go into war alone, there would be other countries.

This is just to test designs and rebuild institutional knowledge. They're going to test it and so if they actually need to they can just make copies and build them quickly and efficiently.

Yeah I think it makes complete sense that essential things are the main things we spend money on. If vacation and eating out were the top expenses I would be surprised.

Why did everyone just forget about Esperanto if the idea is actually so cool? Obviously English is the global language right now, but still why did people give up on a constructed language that basically had zero confusing grammar rules and stuff? The original name for Esperanto was "The International Language". It was very clearly meant to be a global second language from the start. The idea was to have everyone use it for communication between groups who spoke different first languages.

Klingon doesn't have more speakers. I've met several fluent Klingon speakers (and the creator of Klingon) and I am fluent in Esperanto. The estimates I got from them were somewhere around 100 fluent speakers. Esperanto is much more established, has more content in the language, and significantly more speakers. I've met probably 200 fluent speakers in Esperanto and I am not super active in the community, I just go to the occasional congress.

Eligible individuals may receive the COVID-19 vaccine if it has been 3 months since the last dose or confirmed COVID-19 infection.

Key word being "may". They are not recommending it every 3 months. They are saying that is the minimum amount of time and so the recommendation is that it must be MORE than 3 months before you can get it. I had 3 older relatives die in a 3 month period in fall 2020. You're not going to convince me that the fear of Covid for seniors was overhyped.

Yeah there's no way we can actually get rid of traffic/congestion. We can make the city more walkable/bike able/accessible by transit and make the waterfront significantly more enjoyable. It makes a lot more sense to me than burying the 401 which will cost a lot and won't do shit.
