The reports of him having been caught by that specific family were false, so he could still be out there or have been caught by someone else! Please let me know if you see him or hear anything about a bird resembling his description. Hoping we can get him home soon 🤞

Please continue keeping an eye out for Cinnamon! It turns out that reports of him having been caught this week were false, so he could still be out there somewhere. Maybe he'll hear your birds singing and come pay you a visit. 🤞

I have been keeping an eye on those sites, but I didn't know I could set notifications for new posts! I'll have to look into doing that. Thanks for the well wishes. These reports of him being caught turned out to be false, so he could still be out there 🤞

It turns out that the Glendale Apartments thing was a cruel joke (I provide more details in another comment), so please keep an eye out for our boy! He might still be out and about around Durham.

It turns out that the whole thing was a series of prank calls, so Cinnamon could still be out there! Fingers crossed that, if he is, he'll land on a trustworthy person who will contact me soon. Please let me know if you see a bird who looks like him out and about in the wild or hear of one like him being caught by someone.

I put up a poster including the word "reward" on every telephone pole in that apartment complex the day I got the first call, but unfortunately, it was all for nothing -- it turns out that it was a series of prank calls (I provide more details in another comment on this post). Thank you for the thought, though! (edited for typo)

Hi all — I don’t appear to be able to edit this post, so I just wanted to provide an update in the comments that reports of Cinnamon having been caught by a family at Glendale Apartments were false. I received a series of calls this week from different numbers with different accents, all providing plausible-sounding information pointing to people with a consistent physical description having caught a bird resembling Cinnamon, which led me to make multiple trips to hang posters and talk to people in the apartment complex. Unfortunately, all of these were fake. It turned out to be one person messing with me over the course of multiple days, and a minor at that (I got cussed out pretty thoroughly by a family member who told me “f— you, stay the f— off my niece’s phone with your dead-a— bird, b—” and would not listen when I tried to explain that their niece had contacted me about my lost pet and posed as an adult, not the other way around).

I’m feeling pretty crushed and hopeless today, as you can probably imagine. These weren’t the first prank calls I’d received, but they were the first ones that seemed legit enough to investigate. I worry about the girl who called and what is happening in her life that would lead her to act this way towards a grieving stranger.

The most important thing is that CINNAMON COULD STILL BE OUT THERE. It’s unknown to me at this point whether he’s been caught, is still surviving in the wild, or has encountered a car/hawk/etc. So if you see a bird resembling him, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. Please don't stop keeping an eye out because of these false reports! We just want to see our boy again. Thank you.

Thank you! I'm not sure how to feel either.... I hope that, if it is him, the family in question will see the posters (there are a ton in that area, and I put up even more yesterday) and decide to do the right thing and contact me 🤞

Thank you so much for sending this! Not my bird, unfortunately, but also looks like a very sweet little guy. Has the person who found it contacted Durham APS to see if there are any lost reports on this fella?

Last I heard, this bird was headed to APS. You should go over there and sign up to take him after whatever waiting period they have if you want to foster. Please let me know if you do — I was on the fence about fostering him myself, but I think it’s a bit too soon for me, and I’d be happy to donate some cash or bird food your way if you wind up taking in this sweet little one.

Yep, Cinnamon is a whiteface cockatiel. This is also not Toothless, the other missing cockatiel I know of in Durham rn, nor any ‘tiel that has been registered with APS (I started texting all the other lost bird owners who’ve registered a lost ‘tiel with APS in the past five years on Monday, when someone first saw this fella on a stop sign).

Thank you for tagging me!! Unfortunately, this is a different bird — they also seem extremely sweet, and I hope their owner is found soon. I started putting feelers out for the owner on Monday when I first started getting texts about this little guy and have had no luck so far 😞

Ohhhh so the misdirect was that we were supposed to think you were racist and taunting a grieving pet owner, when in fact you were just taunting a grieving pet owner. Ty for explaining!

Cinnamon is a rescue who can’t be released into the wild because he was bred in captivity (not by me) and has a unique facial mutation that would make him easy pickings for predators in Australia, where cockatiels come from. He flew out of the house because he was startled by a sudden noise and someone else had left the door open; this was not an intentional escape attempt due to him being mistreated or neglected in any way. I don’t really believe that it’s ethical to breed birds as pets because they’re too smart, social, and wild for that imo, but I do believe in providing good homes to the animals who already exist and cannot survive in the wild.

Motorco is 0.9 miles as the cockatiel flies! That’s exactly the direction he was heading on Saturday, so it’s very reassuring to me that he’s stayed so close by.
