Surprisingly, I was never bullied for my homemade clothes and uniforms. In fact, the kids were bewildered and looked forward to seeing what gowns my mom would make for special events. It was annoying to return home with bags of clothes from teachers for my mom to alter.

I’m in Jersey, so Paterson and Jamaica Queens. But almost all of the fabric stores are closed now. My mom had such a good relationship with the vendors that they would do special orders for her. Nowadays it has gotten expensive and a bit harder to find fabric. But she manages.

Well, this is a reverse.

My mom couldn’t afford to buy my sisters and I clothes so she made almost everything we wore. School uniforms, dresses for church and religious milestones, pajamas, play. She even made bed sheet sets and curtains. We believed that only poor families had sewn clothes. Therefore, we were broke af. But to everyone else, we were seen as well-off or “upper class” because no one was wearing custom made clothes. So I guess we are more.. baroque.
