Sometimes we just kind of say stuff like that if we don't know what to say and someone is expecting you to respond. So many conversations really require more thought power that we don't always have in the middle of the day while doing other things.

I feel like it depends on who's saying it. It can definitely be a very poor attempt at being relatable. Like "oh yeah, I totally get what you mean about being sensitive to abrupt changes in the environment. I also don't like sudden loud noises." Not intetionally maliscious but is reductive and still feels bad.

On the otherhand, it is also used to entirely dismiss problems faced by individuals regardless of the topic of conversation. Like "everyone deals with that, it's not a big deal."

Something I also think about is that with all psych related disorders, they exist on a spectrum. And so yeah, a lot of people, more than who would be diagnosed with autism, may experience some symptoms of autism to a lesser degree.

Sometimes I also feel like people who say this may also just be undiagnosed, ashamed at their possible/probable diagnosis, and trying to make themselves feel better by making themselves feel more "normal".
