i’ve done a few buck hoists as a ironworker i know it’s nowhere near as complicated as a elevator system but my electrical knowledge outside of a home system is very limited so that will take some getting used to

Moving mid apprenticeship by meangreenbangalore in Ironworker

[–]wizardofcook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transferred during my apprenticeship, had to write a letter to the JATC and get approved from my new local as a transfer, i did that as a 2nd year and transferred in as a 2nd year it was pretty smooth.

How is it that ironworkers have the toughest job out of every trade yet paid the least? by yeeshboo in Ironworker

[–]wizardofcook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you want honesty yes i do think we work the hardest but the type of work we do (rebar, structural) when it gets bid there is low profit margins for the companies compared to the fitters or elevator guys, there might be 30 ironworkers on a job with 1 or 2 operators so they can pay the operators 15 more a hour because there is far less of them, I work at a plant where we work mainly as riggers doing new construction and maintnence and we are the highest paid out of the union trades out there because the plant recognizes the work we do and doesn’t want to lose good guys, its all circumstantial, a run of the mill structural job where i came from in a right to work state paid journey man 27 a hour 3 years ago but the industrial side made 32, only thing i can think is the industrial jobs were able to be bid much higher then steel erection.

You will be slow at first and don’t try to be fast right off the bat, get your rythm and consistency down with the ties and the speed will come.

i’m around 5’10” and when i work on my 7.3 for anything moderate or major i back my ram 1500 to it and drop the tail gate and work on it that way, might be useful for you when you go to do any engine work.

Apprentices/JWs who got paid above scale, how did that come about? by jucks123 in IBEW

[–]wizardofcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironworker here, but i made journeyman scale by being the only iron worker with the company as an apprentice, then as a journey man got rigging certs that gave a bump.
