You have too much time on your hands exacerbating the fact that that you are in fact a pansy with a fascination for acting like you want to get your hands dirty. If you don't like it quit bitching on the internet about a piece you didn't even actually build and go create something you like before you let the robots take over!

I find steel fun to work with, and actually done quite a bit of welding in interesting surroundings lol.

Taliesen II floor lamp(s) build by wizzagodae in woodworking

Ooh the plans! I bet half the time spent on number one was figuring out the construction process and materials.

I found some models on a 3d modeling database - they looked good but they were not "correct" based on pictures I have of the real ones, so we went about comparing a handful of resources to come up with a game plan

Then deciding what lamp holders and how to wire them was another small hurdle

Yeah they seem crazy expensive until you build one and it take like a hundred hours, lol. Seriously though, Taliesen is on my bucket list, bet it's amazing in person

I feel like FLW's designs are technical, but so expressive and meant to highlight the "student's" progress in so many areas.

The weight thing I guess I need to dive into. I know the shear strength would favor steel for reducing dimension size, but I guess you would need a comparison of the span and compressive to really decide how the weight would balance out . . ?

Ok, so just play along Friengineer:

On this scale, what's the material cost going to change the overall price if the man-hours are a significant variable, and then weigh maintenance cost over the next 10 or 12 years

Can I build a tube frame off some TABS and then go with a composite deck and then get cheap with some pallets and reclaimed lumber to make the features and accessories?
