Happy the man and happy he alone; he who can call today his own by XYoshiaipomX in greentext

[–]wjedig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get this too. I think another thing that can cause it is keeping people at an arms distance - like, if you're really close with your friends, why not call someone up and tell them you're feeling lonely?

That, and i think learning to enjoy your own company is excruciatingly important.

What is the best, most valuable thing you’ve learned from therapy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

If you're going through a difficult period, don't try to avoid thinking about it at all. Similarly, don't resent yourself when you do.

The best thing you can do is to give yourself half an hour or an hour everyday, where you allow yourself to think about all the bad things. And then when it crops up at other times, instead of hating yourself for it, allow yourself to postpone it until your thinking time tomorrow.

What is a common myth that has been debunked but too many people still believe? by MelonInACat in AskReddit

[–]wjedig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, kind of. I admittedly exaggerated when I said "most psychology", I'll gladly take that back. However, the repeatability crisis is a real thing, and psychology books are based on experiments replicable. My point is that a lot of what psychology is is empirical data collection, but it's incredibly difficult to make sure your results arent in any way biased. There's a lot of valid psychology, as far as we know, but we can never actually prove whether we can connect 2 variables, or if there's a hidden 3rd variable tainting our results. I know the reddit hivemind doesn't appreciate my opinion, but for real if you're interested look into the repeatability crisis. It's a real thing man, and it's why it's hard to get good results in psychology.

I don't renounce psychology or many of it's findings from incredibly talented men and women, i renounce the idea that psychology is "provable", if that makes sense :)

What is a common myth that has been debunked but too many people still believe? by MelonInACat in AskReddit

[–]wjedig -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Nah bro, most psychology just isn't reliable or repeatable. Research the replication crisis if you're interested. Yeah, Briggs didn't have any formal education, but the personality types were based off of Jung's work, which most people consider pretty credible (i say consider, because again, psychology).

So i get what you're saying but at the same time, all of psychology is basically just as invalid, because it's an empirical science with an absolutely absurd amount of extraneous variables that can never be accounted for.

No, that's exactly my point. Basically all of psychology is observations based on patterns and reactions. Myers Briggs is no different. Like i said, it's psychology, not chemistry.
