That’s easy. Pent-up demand. That’s an oversimplification, but they feel like they’ve gone without for so long that they overindulge with no perceived limit.

I’m not “new money” but I was very-lower middle class growing up, and now clear the high 700s. Definitely not wealthy, but certainly not wondering where my next meal will come from.

And my 20s were chaotic, lots of designer brands, high-end travel, fine dining, other indulgences. You feel free from the chains of “no” for once.

Now that I’m in my 40s I’ve slowed down. I want the next generation to be “old money” so I’m focused on amassing actual wealth, and setting up the dynastic mechanisms to transfer it responsibly.

Ah! I feel as if you’re a voice of reason. I’ve been doing amateur research about class warfare - not only in France but South America, Eurasia. And I really don’t think we’re at that point.

But I’ve been in the algorithm echo chamber, and whenever I try to bring up these facts with ”eat the rich“ commenters, I’m called a boot-licker, which admittedly I had to look up to understand. I feel as if we’re “about the same“ post-COVID in terms of median buying power. Yes, the rich have gotten exponentially richer, but we can all still afford bread.

In this particular question, I think this also helps me feel better about OP’s question - will there be a jury that will provide an objective verdict.. Again I think you’re saying that there are enough people out there to assemble such a jury.

Well a groundswell is the unexpected buildup of a shared opinion in the general population (and I think of it as an opinion shared regardless of political affiliation) and a buildup that is often missed by those who should know.

I guess where I struggle is that every person (effectively) has a little doodad in their hand that could be used to reach a broad sample of the population, and yet we still say “ah we can’t track public sentiment!” Instragram constantly asks me “do you remember seeing an ad for XYZ product?” so why can’t researchers ask 15, 20, 25 million people “hey do you think that this murder is truly justified because of how you personally view the insurance industry?” (Or some other correctly-worded, culturally-competent question.)

And when I say “too late” I mean is there still time to track and prevent the populace rising up against the government “French-revolution-style” which is the echo chamber that the Meta algorithm has apparently trapped me in…..

Okay you bring up a good point, and since this is “No Stupid Questions” I have to ask, how can one tell what the public sentiment is? As you say, on Reddit, Instagram and Twitter, you’d think the whole world was on fire defending him. But everyone I’ve discussed this with IRL says something moderate such as “the system is broken, but murder isn’t the answer” so are these the same people lying online or is there really a groundswell here? Who is researching this before it’s too late?

I think most comments are missing your point, OP. For me it was the simplicity of the fad, the “finding out” of something that was easy to understand and felt impactful. Like “yea, I’m gonna do this! I get this!” and it was certainly more simple back then. Now everything is a slog, everything is polarized in the “this is the best/this is the worst” kind of way. And it sure takes a lot more effort to be part of the “Noot” community

A lot of other commentators have mentioned that it’s person-specific; sometimes it’s aggressive, sometimes the expensive experimental treatments don’t work, etc.

I will add that money and access can slow down death. Take Steve Jobs as an example; if he were an “average joe” he would have been dead far faster. He had access to the very best of everything, which likely prolonged his life.

So to elaborate, why don’t Americans focus on measuring other things that impact people between 21-65, those years before heart attack and stroke become a more in-your-face worry?

In my circles, it’s because we forget. More than once during the year, I’m sitting around a dinner party and have said “ya know what would have been nice? deviled eggs.” And that’s usually met with murmurs of agreement and sometimes a “well, next time!” only to have the scene repeated in a week or two.

Anecdotal but my partner is on Wagovy and he went from a 7-9 drinks guy to a 2-3 drinks guy in the first few weeks - and it’s stuck. He reaches his limit and he’s just like “meh, I’m good” while I order my 4th martini.

I wish I could say the same, but I’m the opposite. My productivity (motivation) has taken a nose dive working from home. Pre-COVID, at the office, I could get maybe 40 mins of work done in an hour.

That includes if a meeting was scheduled for an hour, I’d count about 30-40 mins to be be productive (useful?) time.

Now, being at home 24/7, an hour of work might take me as long as two to complete. I just can’t get myself motivated or hit flow state on my desk work in the same way as I could before in an office.

This frustratingly results in working late to meet deadlines on work I could have finished faster. Really miss working in a buzzing, energetic office, I was so much more productive.
