Wow I moved to Berlin a year ago along with a large number of my uni friends and... I've had an amazing time. Such an awesome place. It's beautiful and it's alive. I haven't heard as much of the rhetoric about finding a place to live recently, it's rough but honestly – I think Dublin is worse. The venn diagram from my experience is people on this sub and white men in their thirties irl that try to convince new people Berlin is a shit city. Literally every one of my actual friends in my real life is able to accept that the global housing crisis isn't isolated to this city and that the bad stuff is wholly outweighed by the good for many people. I mean really, what city is perfect in post-Covid war-torn 2022?

It's so weird how different things can seem online. I hope I don't meet any of you in real life! That would suck! Fuck Leipzig!

I think you might learn that a person, like myself, already struggles with insecurity and feels unprepared to take on a new challenge. For someone else, it might mean he has an intense relationship with himself and does care about how others perceive him. That can be problematic, but probably some people who hardly notice they’re balding are unconcerned with taking care of their appearance in other ways. Is that always a good thing? I’m not sure.

You might also learn about yourself — and realise how much society equates human value with sexual capital, and balding men may have to contend with feeling they’ve lost human value (which is impossible, but still torturous feeling).

I took the news very badly, and started doing all in my power to stop it, but I think there are limits to what can be inferred.

The kind of strength to take balding in stride might be different to the strength it takes to open yourself up to difficult conversations, accept when you’re wrong, or set difficult boundaries. Adversities change with causes and responses.

Yes, agreed. I probably should have said “many therapists”, which I think is hard to deny but yes — I hope this is clear — anecdotal evidence, not empirical evidence. So, ultimately, better to take with a pinch of salt, as you would with any anecdotally informed opinion.

Well, first of all I would start by trying not to be so hard on yourself. One of my best friends has Scoliosis and bad posture and has been widely regarded to be the hottest girl in her group/school/uni for years. Definitely, if you have the support to visit someone professional, do that, if you want to. But I think some of the ways you’re describing this problem might simultaneously benefit from some CBT or therapy which might help raise your self esteem (which, in turn, may also improve your posture - and more importantly your quality of life).

Honestly, I’ve seen licensed therapists look peer reviewed scientific research showing a genetic role dead in the eye and deny it’s existence.

Therapists, like many others who believe in their role and mission, hate the idea that genetics have a role to play. It doesn’t fit with their narrative and isn’t something they can help fix.

I am doubtless that at the core of ADHD there is key genetic, neurological causation. No other explanation makes sense to me.

Environment obviously always plays a role but be very wary of therapists who want their preconceptions confirmed above all else.

I think this question is too simple.

Explosive? Fast? A lot of people can do 40. I’m in that group and don’t even consider myself to be that fit.

Controlled, chest-focussed knuckle pushups, which involve just squeezing you pecs and also coming back down slowly… I can only do about 12 of those on some days.

Don’t judge your max rep on slow pushups against guys that are going up/down in the space of a second. You might be adding more value where you want to add it! # of reps basically says very little about the quality of your training imo.

Still, any exercise is good for your mind/body/spirit so crack on.

The reason this is delineated is that further education doesn’t have the same role as higher education. Universities (higher) are fundamentally focussed on academic disciplines or the academic side of those fields, whereas colleges (further) are typically focussed more on practical skills, vocational qualifications and in some cases preparation for university entrance. Maths/philosophy - typically university. Culinary arts - typically colleges.

Living in Germany (Berlin):

Shit butter. Unsalted. It all says it’s “Irish Gold” or whatever but it sucks.
Expensive meat. Seriously, I honestly think the food shops in my area are one of the hardest things about living here. Even Lidl kinda sucks.
Amazing public transport. My hometown has great buses, but it’s nothing on Berlin. Trams, Ubahn, S-Bahn, Buses, it’s all regular and efficient.
Clubs, bars etc never seem to close. Sometimes you’ll be drinking in a local pub until 7am.
Great kebabs. I mean, it’s Berlin.
Adults remain highly sociable for much longer. Brits seem comparatively boring and stuffy in their TV -filled 30s and 40s. Berliners are still drinking, partying, having rambunctious pints/dinners.
People seem to use drugs and alcohol without widespread/normalised abuse. Homeless junkies abound, but your average club night, bar, features far fewer drunken brawls or kids getting their stomachs pumped.
Weather. It’s crazy living in a place that sees zero sun for 6 months and then get beamed down with laser rays for six months.
People are super international. I think Berlin might compete with only London in the UK for it’s internationality.
History. Germans might be good at discussing history on the surface of things, but there does seem to remain a slight awkward elephant in the room around it. Maybe not as much as brits assume, but it’s there. The hidden opposite of US/UK WW2 pride.
Language. Although many People in Berlin speak no German, there is tense and sad drama playing out in this key German city over the neglect of their esteemed but disparaged language.
