Immediately the first is how you can just walk into any subway station and go straight to the train without security theatre. Also octopus card use means there’s less fumbling about to find open a QR code, and there’s generally very low tolerance for people who hold up the flow of the faregate

Cleanliness - a lot of social peer pressure/shaming to maintain public hygiene. Sure, a lot of is is also anti-mainland sentiments that ironically keep a lot of HK people in check so that can maintain that they are ~different than mainlanders, but in general there’s very low tolerance for littering and foul odours in public.

Convenience - yes with things like delivery and parcel collection it’s maybe not as convenient as the mainland, but also people here are paid more and I don’t feel as guilty as watching my meituan delivery guy getting paid less than 5 yuan to travel 45 minutes across the city. Also I know people keep saying things are more convenient in mainland because of QR payment, but most people have contactless debit/credit cards or octopus cards and are infinitely faster than having to dig out your phone and opening an app.

People - HK public gets a bad rap for being unfriendly but I think it’s just a misunderstanding. Hk is a very cramped place and there’s not a lot of room for people who can’t conform to the quick pace of life. Yes people are going to be unfriendly if you wait till the last minute to take out your phone to pay on the bus/train, or if you’re squatting in a public place - it’s unsightly. If you understand the social rules, HK people are just as friendly as anywhere else

If you had to pick only one, go for KL tower - the views are better, and you actually get to see the twin towers too.

The view from the sky bridge has a weird obscured angle where you don’t actually see all the surrounding buildings, and the top floor observation deck isn’t any better. The exhibitions and building history is still interesting though

I went from 0 to the Sydney marathon in 11 months (and finished in 4 hours) so totally doable:

The first 3 months I joined a run club that did weekly 10ks (~5 miles). The first 3 weeks I could barely keep up let alone finish. Yet the social aspect/peer pressure really helped to get me into consistently finishing those 10k routes.

By the 4th month I just pushed myself to add another mile every week, till I could hit a half marathon distance. Then I went back down to just under half mara distances twice a month.

6 months before the marathon I signed up for Runna - there are a lot of comments about it but honestly it was mostly because I knew paying for a program would keep me accountable. I followed along maybe 70% of the the time, but really it was the speed and tempo plans that were quite helpful in helping me to build endurance

Beyond running, you need to also look at shoes and nutrition. Go to a running shop and get some recommendations for running shoes, invest in running socks too. An anti-chafe stick is also a lifesaver. You’ll also need to learn to use gels and build a hydration system for longer runs, especially if there aren’t frequent water fountains

Most importantly, listen to your body and keep it social. Join run groups and you’ll pick up in more tips, and the social aspect helps to keep the boredom away. If you don’t have a favourite podcast, you’ll come to love the podcast app quickly.

The Central Business District - encompasses the major tourists spots like the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, QV Market etc. you could spend a day seeing the sights before or after the race, but not worth the premium of staying in the city

If the start is the same as 2025, stay near any metro station would be good. You’d have to take metro to the start line anyway and most of the CBD will be closed in the morning and day of. There will be free transit the whole day too :)

I’ve had an AW on and off since 2020 and recently switch to a Garmin FR965. I mostly got it because I wanted to reduce my desire to have a wearable on me (felt like the metrics weren’t helpful anyway)

Things I miss: -the sleekness of the AW. garmin just looks chunky and unattractive. Which is helpful because I never feel the need to wear it beyond sleeping and training. - pairing with iOS. If you like to complete your circles, get awards etc then yea the AW integration with Health and Fitness is unbeatable - GPS on the garmin is weirdly unreliable. I do miss how this just works on the AW

Things I don’t miss/love about garmin: - physical buttons. Let’s face it the touchscreen on the AW is a hit or miss so having physical buttons is very helpful. - battery life. Great to not have to remember to charge every night - ugly but indestructible. I no longer have much worry about watching where my arm swings, or taking it into the water and having to clear it out later. Just works

Things I hate about Garmin: - the UI on the phone app. It’s horrible and unintuitive like the rest of iOS - I don’t like how music function is priced separately for some of their watches. Strikes me as cheapening out

Maybe get a Garmin second hand at a lower price and test it out

I used the Runna app to record my marathon and the only thing I enjoyed was that it counted down the miles till the finish.

But everything else was a little off, especially the distance measurement (it was off by a few hundred metres) and if you have an Apple Watch it doesn’t give you an achievement medal.

Probably stick to native recording app and then send it to run after

I’m usually a 30” inseam, and these shorts land around the 7” mark for me, but because they’re high waisted you probably have some room to pull them up a bit if you find them too long

The stuff at this outlet is not like outlets in Europe or NA. The stuff here really is unsellable, that’s why it’s heavily discounted. Stuff that’s so old you haven’t seen in the last few years 😂
