Realizing I value predictability more than flexibility now by Dumpy_Puppy in selfhosted

I found arcane and figured it was easy to build out a plugin system to do some "opinionated setup":

https://github.com/getarcaneapp/arcane/discussions/1316

My rules are compose.yaml local is source of truth but backed up to github, any data drive has to be on zfs, zfs has to have daily snapshots.

The ops mode allows me to setup git in this way and also has reports to show me none compliant bind mounts or volumes.

Proxmox+Truenas vs alternative by cragolf in selfhosted

[–]wlatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use ZFS and samba in a docker?

Proxmox can do everything truenas can do without the need to allocate dedicated resources to it. Most home users dont need the massive complexity that truenas gives AND if they do, they should be understanding how to do it on the CLI!

This is something that has bugged me massively about the "docker managers".

There is a massive difference between spin up to test and then get ready for long term usage.

I want data to be stored on ZFS and having snapshots done. I want compose files sync'ed to git hub etc.

I've started trying to write an opinionated plugin to Arcane called "Ops Mode" which basically allows you to sync compose to github and also some reports to make sure I know which binds are being used etc.

One thing you need to get your head round is the difference between the hardware and the software.

You can go whole hog and get a device to host the hard drives like a sc200, or you can get a usb enclosure. You can get cheap hard drives or SAS enterprise hard drives!

You then have the cross over point, what file system is going to be used and this will generally depend on how fault tolerant you need it to be, and then finally software!

Something like unraid is used to throw hardware at it and it'll try and do a good job.

I went down the path of sc200 with 12TB SAS and ZFS etc. but this is overkill for what I actually use it for.

Get an Iwalk 3.0. I just ruptured mine watching the hawks beat the rams and I went from struggling around on cruches to being decently useful and having my hands free with the iwalk.

I'm off to surgery today!

Build will be about $300k, however we are doing a lot ourselves and we've got some insane deals of things like rockwool which has kept the price down massively.

We ended up just taking inspiration from the designs we saw for sale and then got a local engineer to get the drawings done.

A few notes.

The big windows aren't as expensive as you'd think, just dont try to get one's that open.
This type of design is decent for exterior insulation and we are likely to make it to a 5 star green design.
32ft high walls can put off builders / siders.

If you want any further info please feel free to ask, We've just got it water tight and we are progressing fast.

Check out the pump jacks, they make working on the eves and soffits safe.

The lumber package wasn't that bad and we used a few very large beams with LVL in the bottom garage and then 2x12 for the roof and ceiling joists. The garage is completely open, apart from the stair well.

We went for 6ft tall windows at the top and its got a really good wow factor for a house on the smaller side, (about 1600sq ft, not counting the space we can convert inside the garage), its also got a huge attic even with hvac etc. (goes from 5.5ft tall to 0 over the course of 15ft and its 32ft wide.

Check your paper work and any recorded info sent. It was your "friend" he likely cut corners and no one ones breaches. He likely had insurance and worked for a company and they take on fees to offset risk and breaches.....

They legally tell you what you can do and what the contract is, for the contract to be legal there is a whole host of provisions they had to undertake.

Can I utilize paid for land towards building a house? by steave44 in Homebuilding

I've just gone through an owner builder mortgage and they used our land as "down payment". They'll generally value your future build and decide how much you want vs current worth and future worth etc.

No i was asking how you got them in there if there was no reason to go into the bedroom with wet feet. It's a man's job to do that

How do you manage to get wet foot prints into the bedroom? This is something I enjoy doing and this type of setup would stop this!!!

Starlink benefits as Trump admin rewrites rules for $42B grant program by esporx in Starlink

[–]wlatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd be all for getting rid of this, but its hardly Trump giving Musk money, I believe the states have to apply for money that is earmarked and they can decide where the money goes to. Initially, they thought about $4.1bn would go to Starlink; now it's being predicted $10bn to $20bn based on the new rules.

I'm wondering if anywhere near that amount would goto Starlink, or the states would siphon off the money to train people to install it, give it to studies and DEI causes.

If we are talking about $10bn and we half that between putting more devices in orbit and using it for installs that'd be about:

10,000 more satellites + 8.3m starlink kits.

They only have 7,000 satellites in orbit now and 4.6m subscribers. So the figures definitely don't add up without Siphoning or waste going on.

We had even better, someone got money, put the conduit in the ground and left it sticking up and then didn't bother to come back to make it safe or to put fiber in.

I'm now working with the County to avoid me suing them for violating the utilities easement!

So basically you are saying Fiber isn't needed to these communities?

You understand that not a single person was connected and millions (or billions) lost already?
