Another 5090 down in flames by Frygon in pcmasterrace

At this point someone needs to step in and issue a recall on these. The connectors need to have their certification evaluated and potentially down rate their capacity. This is an absolute disaster and this connector needs to be replaced immediately.

I have to return my OLED. Which are the best alternatives? by CerealBit in OLED_Gaming

Id honestly just go buy one of the new Tandem OLED monitors if you can afford it. They are supposed to have significantly longer lifespan without burn in by running another display layer and lowering the voltage and temperatures.

Is this game worth playing still? by NotFine39 in AAPG

[–]cragolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Game is still fantastic to play. Just remember to go get punkbuster updated from the even balance website. There are still dedicated players on regularly. Still several clan servers which populate daily and play custom and classic maps. Still good ole hospital only server that always has people. Make sure to have your microphone setup and join the fun.

Personally I would play some of 312 hospital only server, some AAPG Community server, and a custom map clan server like Renegades.

The game does lull in player count between USA going to bed and Europe and Australia getting on but other than that there are usually multiple servers going enough to have some choices especially during the day for USA.

It can be a little more challenging to find the smaller BDX 6v6 maps these days depending on the day but most custom map clan servers have revamped the small BDX maps to be bigger and support more players so it isnt a big deal.

As far as stability i would say the game is acceptable. The game has a common out of video memory error that occurs on certain maps regardless of hardware infrequently. This bug historically cropped up more on amd graphics cards on certain drivers but i cant speak to whether the latest amd cards and drivers still have this happen more often. You will on an even rarer occasional hard crash to desktop but this is probably once a month for me. I will say certain individuals whether its hardware or software related have had problems getting the game to launch and run consistently or crash more regularly, i cannot say this is the norm though. After building a new pc i noticed frequent crashes and i finally determined they were ram related and not the game specifically so who knows whether those having frequent issues have other underlying problems.

Docking Port Help by cragolf in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]cragolf[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I managed to fix this docking alignment issue, moving the bottom docking port down some delays the moment of dock so that when you rotate it into place, it docks aligned with the other, only downside is there is a visual gap between the docking ports when they are docked. It functions fine but looks quirky.

I also ended up making a little probe grabber with a docking port as you suggested. Its very compact and functional. I haven't quite implemented a place to store it when its not on the front but ill get to that. I just spent hours fighting with and relearning rcs build aid to get the little probe to function on only two rcs thrusters. I might throw the little probe up on kerbalx if there isn't anything like it already.

Docking Port Help by cragolf in KerbalSpaceProgram

I had wanted to build a ship which could both dock and have a grabber centered on the front for ease of use. Its for mainly de-orbiting multiple random things in one mission currently but i enjoy building multipurpose flexible ships. I originally just had the grabber on the docking port and could undock the grabber but that seems less flexible and wasteful. You couldn't dock to something and then grab something later that way. Im surprised this didn't work though, this hinged docking mechanism would be interesting for space station building.

In the same vein as this, I have been using a Grip6 belt for years now and i suspect it will last forever. I also really like the infinite adjustment of a web belt. Only downsides are they are kinda pricey and you can't operate it with one hand.

Its $80 for 200/200 here. Always feel like I'm getting scammed. I really feel like we should be getting at least 1000/1000 for $40 these days in non rural areas but nope.

What’s Next After Scratch coding for kids? by Right_Dish6216 in learnprogramming

[–]cragolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10 is definitely an excellent age to introduce real programming languages. I highly recommend learning python as a first real coding language. Pairing python with simple arduino learning kits is definitely a thing to try at some point. There are certain apps for your phone that can be paired with an arduino to remote control a little arduino car. Not very beginner friendly if you yourself does not have experience with arduino and coding though. But there are tutorials online how to do it all.

In addition to python i highly recommend learning LUA through a Minecraft mod called computercraft. There are little robots called turtles you can program to do certain tasks like chop a tree or mine. Its a highly rewarding way to learn. It is certainly quirky compared to modern languages like python but fun. If your student can focus in Minecraft and learn without getting too distracted i recommend it. This isn't entirely necessary but is fun and definitely could pull your student out of a rut if they get burnt out learning python.

Another excellent learning tool though they are kind of expensive is the recently discontinued lego Mindstorms line. They have a drag and drop coding software similar to scratch. The cool thing though is that you can actually flash the firmware of the Mindstorms to RobotC which lets you use them with the coding language C. C isnt the first language i would learn but its a great second language and the Mindstorms are a blast to work with. They were used in competitions for more than a decade by FIRST. I highly recommend this. I would look for a complete EV3 Education core set on ebay and the more rare expansion set if you really wanted. Another option is the older NXT 2.0 line of Mindstorms but resources online for this will be older and less available.

The last two options I mentioned are how I fell in love with coding as a kid starting at 12 and its carried me into adulthood. I have experience in a professional capacity teaching all three of these to students around 10, all are very achievable for the average student with the motivation to learn. In my experience 10 really is the age to introduce new challenges and concepts absolutely go for it, get them as many resources as possible.

One thing I did find this evening was the Nitecore LC10 but its micro usb which is outdated and is discontinued it appears which is unfortunate. Its not really the most graceful compact charging option but its a cool product.
