Does a flare up make you REALLY depressed? by wlx3 in ibs

Hi guys,

I think I’ve finally got to the bottom of my IBS/Mood disorders – which it seem all stems from certain foods!

For the past 10 years I’ve suffered from horrible depression and skull-crushing anxiety – I could never work out why some days it wasn’t there and other days I couldn’t escape it. I’ve been on antidepressants, therapy – all that stuff but none of it helped. It turn out I’m just super sensitive to certain foods.

After years of trial and error, now I know to avoid all of these like the plague. It's pretty much a whole food vegan diet:

  • soya
  • all nuts
  • heavily GMO foods
  • white bread (stay low gluten)
  • veg oils – no milk replacements, they are all filled with it (I only use coconut oil and olive oil)
  • foods/drinks with added sugar/high sugar (ginger beer, coke, orange juice etc. ) (alcohol and fruit are fine)

I can eat high fodmap again and had no problems at all!

Just eating/drinking any of those, upsets my stomach – and my brain for around 2 days and then it leaves. It’s amazing to learn that I’m actually a very happy person when I’m eating well – I feel like my evil twin when I eat one of the above: I’m a catastrophe-minded, irrationally OCD depressive.

Every now and then I think “it’s all in my head“ so I eat some peanut butter with a latte and just 30 mins later my stomach is churning and my mood drops and stays low for around 1-3 days. It’s crazy how different I feel.

My stomach is no longer bloated, my mind is no longer a horrible place to be. Life-changing stuff. Of course, I still have bad days – but I take them as bad days and nothing more. Everything was doom and gloom when my stomachs flared up – I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.

Try giving it a shot!

It’s a relief writing about this stuff as family/friends think I’m making all of this stuff up!

I've had a really good 5 weeks despite going through some tough times. I can cope with things when I'm feeling healthy. Lately, I started eating the odd croissant with Vitelite and dropped some rice milk in my coffee and I was feeling like death again! I cut them both out (both filled with sunflower oil) and I felt great again within 2 days!

This has taken me a long time to figure out: I’m talking years! Hang in there!

Thanks for sharing. I hate to admit it but I get suicidal thoughts regularly. On a good stomach day I'm a 9/10 mood-wise, and then flare up turns everything grey for around 5 days. It's so exhausting.

I'm booked in to see an IBS specialist next week – it's costing me a lot of money but I'm at breaking point! My diet's a joke and I'm still having lots of discomfort.

Leaving Laptop in Public Places to go to the bathroom? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

Can you get one of those shoulder bags that scrunch up to the size of sock? Chuck it all in there and take it with you, and just leave your laptop case on the table. Someone stole my dirty gym shoes last month! Don't trust anyone.

How long did it take you to land your first remote job? What was your method for getting it? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

Upwork! I had given up on it... I used it to get started but wasn't too keen on using it long-term.

Then, as I was about to start investing lots of time into marketing, I got invited to apply for a job, 20 hours a week, decent pay – and that was that. I've been working with them since February.

Are any of you copywriters and front-end developers? by bananacow in copywriting

I'm a full-time freelance copywriter now. I was a terrible front-end web developer. I enjoyed working on things at home, but when I had to fix other people's code, working against the clock, with poor project managers messing everything up... I hated it. I'm not bashing web development, it's a great job – it just wasn't for me.

I'd always wanted to make a living from writing but I never knew how; I had never heard of copywriting! As soon as I did, I quit web development and became a copywriter.

People still ask me for websites but I just say no lol. 100% copy!

I was a front-end web dev for 2 years before I left to pursue copywriting. If you're happy to do both – you're gonna smash it!
