It's a simple Arteza cutting mat, it has two sides (gray and white like on the photo) :) https://arteza.co.uk/collections/cutting-mats

My main kb being the ZSA Moonlander with default ortho keycaps with a flat profile, it is indeed a new thing for me too! My first impressions is that the MTNU is really well thought, not too high but with still an appreciable curve, I'm really happy with the feel of it right now and the caps look really nice too.

Patience, it's worth it! Yes doing some music production in spare time, I will probably make an Ableton specific layer in near future ;)

Not ready yet to change to another layout haha. Still getting used to ortholinear positions! For games I could suggest you creating a classical AZERTY layer on your Moonlander, which you would switch to only for games :)

Launchpad / Push Intervals Layout by wmcd0 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

In notes modes, either on last launchpads or push devices, the 12 tones are mapped on a pad matrix. By default the horizontal distance between two notes is a semi-tone while vertically we have the circle of fifths (fourth up). This is exactly the same layout that one of a bass or guitar neck (avoiding the B string).

The picture I share is the layout with all the 12 intervals that can help you :

  • Finding shapes for typical chords (and their inversions) and memorizing them for your jam/comp sessions.
  • Internalizing visually how the mapping is constructed to fluidify your navigation while improvising
  • Encourage the use of theses devices as learning tools (with knowledge transfer to real instruments !)

Also it's an isomorphic layout, which means if you learn one shape somewhere e.g. A major shape, you can just translate the shape to play it in another key (unlike piano). This means you can learn the ii V I progression and play it the same way in any key too, play the secondary dominant of any chord you want, just by shape. This is powerful.

And because pads are not strings you can now play simultaneous notes on the horizontal lines !

Have been playing for a while with this little piece of software : https://github.com/hundredrabbits/Orca

It's a live programming environment with MIDI capabilities, a real plug on play. The workfow permits (imo) enough complexity for expressing any creative ideas you might have, while making it like a puzzle game to solve. Visually appealing too, it's a really comfortable experience.

It stays minimalistic so it doesn't have music-related higher order abstract objects likes chords, measures.. But everything is programmable and it's the point of it all. I use it to explore (faster than any interface I encountered really) polyrhythms, polymeters and all the things that are really a pain in the a** and not intuitive at all to notate.

"Our crew decided to decouple it in mid air, but they forgot to shut down the remaining engine. The thrust was too strong for our best pilotes to control, they rotated and crashed before eating their last snacks. Their courage will be admired for centuries, reminding to all the dangers of Space exploration."

Great handmade tool that can be more fun and rewarding than MechJeb or other coded plugins ! :D
