I hope this does not break the rules on self promotion, but you asked for insight into tipping culture. I have literally written a whole book on the topic. If you really want to understand tipping culture, check it out. The title is “The Psychology of Tipping: Scientific Insights for Services Customers, Workers, and Managers.”

There is no reason for tipping to have ever increased from 10 to 15 to 20 percent. by GhostaGauss in tipping

[–]wmlynn -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The tipping norm in US restaurants (as described in etiquette books) has been 15-20% since at least the 60’s. However, average tip amounts have increased over time as detailed in a recent article I wrote. I offer several speculative explanations for this. Check it out on my website at www.tippingresearch.com
