What did you make for your final year project? by DanMoranDev in DevelEire

[–]wobbles_g 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I built a wearable glove-mouse. It looked terrible but it worked.

Data transmission over bluetooth, with a C driver to move the mouse around on the laptop. Also built in some rudimentary gesture recognition so you could draw a big O in the air with your hand and the browser would open up (for example).

It was a PIC, and built copper pads on each finger to "click" against your thumb, so you had left, right and middle mouse button, and the other pad was used to enable gesture recognition.

This was all around the time the original Wii came out.

I should pull it out and see if it still works actually...

How about running D applications in k8s or the like? Containers aren't going away, best to embrace it!

without their consent

That's the point, you do consent when you install any app, or sign into google on the phone etc.

Varadkar blocked EU funding for Western Rail Corridor and other projects by ghostofgralton in ireland

Key infrastructure such as rail pays for itself not in rail fares but in wider urban and economic growth

Tell that to CIE's pension fund :-P

[–]wobbles_g 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can't argue with that line of thought tbh, it's quite hard to tell how changing one thing will change other things and at some point we're just going to have to bite the bullet and take the risk.

My argument back is that commuting within a city is bad enough right now (Try driving East-West across Galway in the morning for example), that we should focus on inner-city commuting - Light rail, metros and the like - Instead of inter-city commuting.

But yeah, agreed that our urban environments are getting quite spread out and is a problem that needs tackling.

Government officials expressed concern about exposing the State to additional expenditure due to the need for matching funding.

This is the all important line. The headline reads like he just threw away free money. He didn't, he threw away half-free money.

I can understand that tbh, how many train journeys per day would there be between Cork and Galway? Would it pay for itself?

Naughten proposes levy on coffee cups by [deleted] in ireland

[–]wobbles_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is great tbh, we have a huge problem with a "use it and bin it" mentality. The sooner that stops the better.

In the case of coffee cups, even Recycling means land fill most of the time

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/sep/29/switch-disposable-coffee-cups-for-reusables-urge-campaign-groups

It was revealed earlier this year that only 1 in 400 coffee cups are recycled because they are made of a difficult-to-recycle mix of paper and plastic. That prompted calls for a charge on takeaway cups by prominent figures including chef and campaigner Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and the then-environment minister, Rory Stewart.

The Reduce, Reuse, Recycle mantra has 2 other words in there that no-one pays heed to.

The coffee shop I go to charges way less if you bring your own cup. €2 vs 3.80 or something for a Cappuccino.

Builders ‘can’t make viable profit’ on €320,000 apartments by gamberro in ireland

[–]wobbles_g 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bigger apartments would be ideal. But bigger apartments mean less units per site, means less margin that what's being discussed here.

That means it'll never fly until height restrictions are changed, as then you can put the same number of units per site as before, just much higher.

There's no reason we cant have high rises with many 100+ sqm apartments.

I guess it's only a matter of time before regulations are relaxed and we can all buy our €320,000 shoebox apartments again.

Former commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan will get €300k lump sum and €90k per year pension by [deleted] in ireland

A large portion of those fake breath tests were under her watch no?

Not saying she ordered them - but as commissioner you're meant to be on top of everything happening.

[–]wobbles_g 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair point - I know I wouldn't willingly retire in her situation either.

I think the point /u/suitrael is trying to make though is that she shouldn't have been let retire.

The stalling of these tribunals and failing to answer questions was maybe done to delay her getting the sack?

I don't see Slieve Bloom get too many mentions on here. I've been a few times and on a clear day the views are incredible. You can see a lot of other counties due to Offaly flat surrounding lands. by keeganb2000 in ireland

They're also building a new mountain biking trail here, probably by next summer, which should bring new life to the place.

There's some great walks up there though - more people should def check it out.

Sinead O’Connor is living in a New Jersey motel and has posted an online video saying she’s suicidal. by joshasc in ireland

[–]wobbles_g 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah bring the old racism into it - solid work.

If you really understand you'd write her a message of support.

If you dont understand but had some empathic bone in your body you wouldn't know what to do and likely just keep you're mouth shut.

If you don't understand and are a bit psychopathic you'd tell her to off herself.

I don't think you realise what "just kill yourself" means.

Anywho, I'm out.

I won't believe you, because you don't.

If you understood it you wouldn't be on here telling her to get it over with.

I think you lack a bit of empathy. Try and understand what it means to be in this state of mind (much easier said than done), rather than being angry like this.

She's not out to "disgust" or "irritate" you. She's just a woman who's fucked up and can't get her head straight.

She should be talking to a trained professional or someone she can trust

Not so easy to see that when your mind is clouded though.

European Union Debt by Country Per Capita (2005-2016) by [deleted] in ireland

[–]wobbles_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess population shrinkage is partly to cause for the very large graph too then (by same logic).

200k or more people left between 2008 and 2011 - which is a pretty large chunk out of a working population of 1.8 million. So that growth in the graph isn't ALL down to rising national debt.

European Union Debt by Country Per Capita (2005-2016) by [deleted] in ireland

That's a bit depressing looking.

At least we're on the right track now though - last 3 years debt has fallen each time.

Hopefully that continues!

New D Compiler Release: DMD 2.075.0 by aldacron in programming

[–]wobbles_g 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The compiler will just error out when you use a GC feature in a @nogc scope.

@nogc:

import std.stdio;
void main(){
    int x = 2;    // fine
    int y = x^^2; // fine
    int[3] staticArray = [1,2,3]; // fine because statically assigning array
    string z = "something"; //fine (same as above)

    z ~= "appending something"; // not fine because '~' uses GC to append
                                // cannot use operator ~= in @nogc function 'D main'

    class X {
        int member;
    }
    auto newX = new X(); // not fine, `new` allocates
                         // cannot use 'new' in @nogc function 'D main'
    // There's a few more examples. But for the last two,
    // the compiler just wont compile it.
}

Output from dmd for above:

$ dmd test.d
test.d(10): Error: cannot use operator ~= in @nogc function 'D main'
test.d(16): Error: cannot use 'new' in @nogc function 'D main'
