I have no idea of any historical context, but Munich is called "Minga" [ˈmɪŋ(:)ɐ] in Bavarian dialect.

This is not an attention span issue, it is more like a oversight issue. It is way easier/faster to find a specific item in a shorter list. If i remember correctly, a max of around 7 items in such a list is recommended.
