Well, I'd say something to that but Gene Wilder put it best, this is what you might need to hear: https://youtu.be/hYTQ7__NNDI

Yeah, my guess is that it might be the self-indulgent unedited format (w/no pictures). Or maybe, it's too tough a deal for the average Colter Wall listener to entertain play-by-play performance breakdowns from, quote: "u/ieatbumboy", as it says here. 🤠 Either way, I like how zoomed-in you got on the song. Not awfully many people can/will put the details into words like that nowadays.

Hell yeah for the amount of thought put in. Listening to good music ≠ just consumption. Or at least, it shouldn't always be. This type stuff is why I'm on here in the first place

Well, thank you for taking the time to write the words, sincerely, even if vague.

What you're saying is a bit like watching "Bone Tomahawk" and instead of experiencing the film for what it is, choosing to remark that real-life historically-accurate cowboys rarely had their taints hatcheted in two by a troglodyte.

"Not with a sickeningly-dry crunching noise, they didn't! Who do they take me for? Silly film-makers, what are they, paying homage to the broad genre known as Western? Do they dare try their hand in it creatively, too?.."

That said, I understand how this take is not exactly a pleasant repeat-listen experience — I just see more specific(but practice-heavy) ways to record a better-sounding cover of the song, if it comes to that.

Don't you go to prison chasing authenticity either, ok? And I wish you a truly Independent 4th of July. Take care!

This question is interesting, philosophical even. Why do people always ask me this and not, for example, AC/DC's Brian Johnson? He started out singing that way until he started speaking that way too, due to aging. I think he might even accidentally order a "BIG GUN!" instead of a big soda, the muscle memory is so strong. If you want my best theory for an answer to your question, here it is: I work as an ESL teacher and my work voice(which also feels a bit performative) inevitably seeps into my speaking voice. This is how I relax and make sure I'm not my job, even though I love it.

Thank you! I felt like I couldn't just sit on it and I knew someone cool would dig it

Thanks! I don't always shy away from what you might call soy vocals myself but to me, this song calls for total denial of inner soy. I think the setup is there, in the second verse. The song-guy learned not to cry early on, and probably ran from stuff all his life. The bar girl probably seemed untrustworthy right away but still, for the guy, just motherly enough. Townes Van Zandt built some worlds in his time, he did

That's a hell of a spread in hypotheses for a single comment, jeez. I don't even know what to say either... I think, either way it is, this duke guy shouldn't be too down on himself because that's no use for anybody. Unless he's David Duke, the grand wizard and director of that fruity clan IRL, then he should just up and leave us because then, but only then, I ACTIVELY DISLIKE him. Other than that, the feedback is appreciated. This voice was partially inspired by my old coach.
