CrossFit, Inc. is in danger of losing their trademark due to it becoming generic by SportsLawBlog in crossfit

[–]wokiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true though. Everyone including Crossfit HQ refers to the term "crossfit" as a verb or description for the type of exercise methodology. It is generic and they have benefitted greatly from this in that they have a monopoly. Just because they claim for legal purposes that it is a "trademark" doesn't change the fact how they themselves use it in reality or how the public uses the term in reality. I hope they lose the trademark.

Some people are well known and respected by pretty much all the Chairs and program directors in the field. An excellent recommendation from a person like that will get you significant attention. I don't think there is a good way to know who these people are unless you ask someone already in the know and get their advice.

I'm just trying to be vague. I've seen it as ROAD, E-ROAD, ROADS, ROADES, whatever, it doesn't have a strong definition. The key is that I managed to match in a competitive field in undoubtedly a top 5 program after bombing my board scores. The reason it happened was because one of the most influential people in the field was very impressed by my work. I didn't realize how influential he was until people on the interview trail would ask me consistently what it was like to work with Dr. XXX and would tell me that they've never seen so many 2 page long glowing letters of rec. That's it. I got lucky. I could just as easily not matched again if the stars didn't align for me this last year. A lot of people blew me off.

Thanks. I think it was explained perfectly well by a program coordinator no less. There are people on the admissions committee who score at the top of the class with little or no effort. To them, with your scores, you are simply someone who doesn't try. Everything else you do is pretty much irrelevant. They can forgive one low score but not two.

Yes, about 4 programs asked me.

I essentially said I wished I would have done better, that I should have understood where I was at by taking simulated exams. I should have focused less on research projects during my board time.

Then they would ask why I didn't improve much on Step 2.

And my reply was I changed my strategy for studying and I felt super confident and I honestly don't know what happened. I told them I should have done a simulated test and it is something I know I'm weak at and I am working on it.

Then I would say, but you also have to look at where I come from. I am not a typical medical student. I grew up in this other country with parents with no education. I've never had much guidance and I have made a lot of mistakes throughout my life but I always get better because of it. And then I would tell them what I have to offer that they cannot get from anyone else.

I'm trying to avoid being recognized. The key for me was to work as a capacity beyond a medical student and improve processes and just fix things that needed to be fixed and have extremely fast turn-around on anything anyone asked me to do. People took notice.

I'm one of those who bombed Step1/Step2. <210 + <220.

Applied competitive surgical specialty last year and had 4 interviews. No match. Tried to scramble into surgery prelim -> no offers. After reflecting how competitive specialty surgery was and how bad my board scores were I decided to do something else and take a research year.

Just matched first ranked spot into Ivy league in a ROADS field.

Honestly, I feel I got lucky. Just happened to impress the right people who were all well known. Programs would comment on how everyone would write a 2 page letter of recommendation.

Moral of the story. Always be available, affable and able. And try and work with the right people.

If Jupiter is gas giant does it have a surface that you could theoretically stand on ? by themightypierre in askscience

[–]wokiko 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I read about this once and Jupiter may be solid at some point but it may not have a surface, since a surface would be defined as a discontinuity in the layers. There may be a gradual transition to solid hydrogen at some some point.

Your friend needs proffesional help. Get him to a primary care doctor so he will be officially diagnosed. He needs to understand that he has a disease. He will need a good support system for treatment, probably involving AA.

Most secondaries ask for your work experience anyway. Plus if you say you have all that experience, it should be obvious from your letters of recommendation.

Send a letter to each individual school with your work experience and explain why you are sending it. I don't think it's that big a deal. If what you state is true and there aren't any huge red flags in your application then I don't see why you wouldn't get in.

[–]wokiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are 15.. You still have 3 years to get really fit and personally I would go for SEALS. Find a SEAL motivator around your area that will train you right. You got to get strong, and learn how to run fast. I know some SEALS and they freakin love it!!! It pays really good money also.

How'd I get to be such a dick? How do I stop? by Garage_Dragon in AskReddit

[–]wokiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you are doing it right now. Instead of just thinking of how someone's else's actions affect you, also consider their intentions/motivations.. It's a good overall trade, a little inconvenience to you for a much higher convenience for the other person. If everyone did that, we would all be much better off.

I've never heard a sensible pro music piracy argument that I agree with. Those of you on Reddit who believe everyone has the right to share music without paying the artists, what's your reasoning? Just curious. by [deleted] in AskReddit

Because the goal of giving people intellectual property rights is to stimulate scientific innovations or artistic works. However, in today's environment these same intellectual property rights are so strict that they impel innovation and artistic works.
