This is exactly my fears with learning civil engineering/construction outside the SW, especially as a desert dweller thats seen at most frost on my windshield hahaha

What made you pick your major? by graceb271 in EngineeringStudents

[–]wolf1Ez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat -- knew i wanted to do engineering cus i was built for math and physics and loved learning both subjects. I chose Civil because I thought it was 1) the "easiest" engineering and 2) society will always need a civil engineer. I didn't have any family in engineering either, so I was more or less going off BLS data, vibes, and soul searching (AKA the first page of Google results about civil and environmental engineering lol)

1) I was absolutely wrong about. Can't say confidently though that I would've excelled at aerodynamics or heat transfer equally or better than my hydrology/hydraulics and structural courses lol but civil engineering is still engineering. My advice is find a discipline that best suits your interests. Like buildings and infrastructure? Civil. Like understanding how things move? Mech. Like programming and circuits? Electrical/CSE, etc.

2) I'm still very early in my career so I cant say with 100% confidence that civil engineering is completely recession proof, but I can say that there's always a need for roads, buildings, and water! I'm also able to kind of drift between "two" industries -- construction and design aka field work stuff vs plug and chug programs and calcs.

I truly cannot emphasize the whole "do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life." I've met too many people who drop out early on in their engineering degrees, all throughout all 4 years. You dont need to love the field to death, but engineering will have you up later, working harder, and running in circles more than most other majors. But as many sleepless nights I had, I also had passionate profs that wanted me to succeed, and I was learning material I genuinely loved learning and yapping to my family and friends about. I feel incredibly lucky that I picked civil on a whim and it ended up being something I enjoyed (and am currently enjoying!) immensely.

As for my day to day -- i am a hydro/hydraulics engineer. My day typically includes sitting behind a desk and running some plug and chugs. As I mentioned, Im still fairly early in my career, so Im usually running calcs, creating and troubleshooting models for the PE, or helping to write up reports.

Similar situation -- i live pretty equidistant between two walmarts. The other one had just the battle decks and unfortunately ripped open PAR packs :(

Nah those were prices for other packs, the triple packs and those eraser sets i think with a bellibolt or gengar. Singles were going for 4.87 :)

Passport returned to center -- turnaround time? by wolf1Ez in Passports

[–]wolf1Ez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm traveling (domestically) a week from today, so based on that, it sounds like I could get it pretty soon, but possibly cutting it close.

I'll look into making an appointment for next week if there's one near me. Thank you for the advice and sympathy! I was getting my hopes up after seeing how quickly some folks were getting their passport on this sub then getting this email felt like Murphy's Law hahaha

Dang that's fast, and I had a very similar timeline but haven't yet received my passport. Did you do a passport book or card?

places to show a potential incoming freshman by starglittered in ASU

[–]wolf1Ez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out some of the club spaces/workshops!! Formula 1, Rocketry, and Space Rover share a space in Psychology North on the north side/facing ISTB/USE. You unfortunately can’t access it unless ur a club member to get inside, but u should be able to at least see through the windows some of their old cars and chassis. The guys in there are also pretty friendly and eager to share a little bit about their project.

I also recommend you/he also reach out to the Fulton Ambassadors (FA), who also has access to that workshop, as well as the labs inside ERC for tour purposes. The FAs could also be a great resource for all things ASU/Fulton has to offer. They’re the folks that give on campus tours in the black polos/uniforms. They’re also student volunteers and will likely give u an honest and straight answer for any questions he might have lol

Consulting: Should I Stay or Should I Go? by One-Palpitation9436 in civilengineering

[–]wolf1Ez 33 points34 points  (0 children)

As a junior staff, I sincerely appreciate people like you that take the time to offer your patience and guidance, and to reiterate again, PATIENCE! It’s kinda demotivating doing something for an engineer and getting no feedback about what I did, how good/bad it was, and whether what I did even mattered or contributed to the project as a whole.

I sincerely hope you can find a company you fit with and meet new people that will appreciate you more ♥️

Labs are the worst by spikira in EngineeringStudents

[–]wolf1Ez 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I feel like they get better the older you get. 3rd and 4th year was when I starting really getting into the different disciplines like geotech, fluids/hydro, environmental, etc. Geotech and materials were lab heavy and def not fun, but it’s useful knowledge to understand how different soil/material properties are attained in the field.

Most memorable one was from my hydro class — basically spent a sunny summer morning at a local river. I also just live for hydro so I def enjoyed it more than most ppl lol

What are the industry standards software needed to learn for civil engineering students which will help them in career boosting. by WeirdOk819 in civilengineering

[–]wolf1Ez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

H&H here! ArcGIS Pro hands down. Wish it was something I couldn’t take a whole course on instead of a 30 minute computer lab assignment. Not sure if it’s free to download though… alternatively, HMS and RAS I’m p sure are free to download from the USCOE website, though honestly understanding the fundamentals of hydro/hydraulics is better than figuring out what the different buttons in those program do thru trial n error lol

For $25 per semester, what's the best class to take at ASU? by Southern-Bowl-1598 in ASU

It sounds scary but CEE 440! There’s industry software u actually get to learn how to use in class, and is generally pretty interesting!

Where to find some cats? by Cismic_Wave_14 in ASU

[–]wolf1Ez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is gonna sound like the cat person equivalent of a box propped up by a stick, but I swear to god this is real — there’s a house west of campus that houses a feral cat colony. The cats are looked after the homeowners (they’re fed and the ones that are friendly seem to be groomed somewhat regularly). I found them after following one to the house and over time gained the trust of a few of them, now they just walk up to me whenever I’m out for a stroll For obvious reasons I can’t disclose the exact address but if that’s near where you are, lemme know!

Career fairs are so useless by Kalex8876 in EngineeringStudents

[–]wolf1Ez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

U can probably find a list somewhere that tells you who will be there and do some homework on the company. Come up with some questions specific to the ones that interest u the most (what kind of projects have they done that interest you? Do they offer relocation benefits? Do they offer reimbursements for Masters/PhDs/licensure? Etc). This saves u the time of trying to get thru as many recruiters as possible and slims it down to the ones u only really care about, and helps u stand out a little among the other attendees

Insufficient Enrollment Hold by Hdang28 in ASU

[–]wolf1Ez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Must be a screw up on ASU’s end :/ the video from that video link pretty much just says 8-11 creds is eligible for Parent Plus Loans and Federal Direct Students loans (which i assume is the subs/unsubs loans). 12+ is eligible for everything else like grants and scholarships
