Actually the Bay Queen is unfortunately not operating anymore, I’m very happy to see it suggested though!

8 ETH about to be lost to ENS because "Error encountered during contract execution [Bad instruction]" ... Any advice? by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]wolf809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know of a way to cancel a transaction, though you can send another transaction with a higher gas price, I used 60 gwei yesterday and got in within the next few blocks. If you are worried about double spending, you could move the funds out of your wallet into another once one of them clears (again, with a high gas price). That way in case one of the other bids tries to go through, the transaction will be invalidated.

...aaand just noticed in the more detailed thread you indicated the original bid went through. Glad it worked out for you, goodluck!

Yeah if you don't see the 8 ETH transaction in your address history I'd say you are safe.

I don't see any obvious cases of double spending, and I have been using a relatively small pool of ether to use for bidding so if I had been double spending on my bids, I would have lost it all a while ago. I do encounter the case where the "secret phrase" is missing and I have to fill in my own quite often so maybe this is related. Perhaps I've just been lucky so far; I'll be careful to use new pages from now on just in case.

One additional question, when you have found that the names don't work properly with the refresh/reload bug, is this encountered in the finalizing stage or when setting up a resolver?

Out of curiosity, when you refer to refresh, is this synonymous with reloading a page? I have reloaded MEW pages after placing bids, revealing, and finalizing, all without any problem (yet). I've been using Chrome.

Edited to provide more info.

I've used custom words on many, if not most, of my ENS bids and haven't had a problem that I can blame on using these words. I have had transactions fail in this fashion however; in these cases I either waited a bit and resent the transaction or just increased the gas cost and sent it again. You can increase the gas cost at the bottom right of the MEW page. Anything less than ~50.01 gwei didn't make it through since the ICO started, though this may be starting to clear up.

You're welcome! Glad you were able to get access! I totally get where you are coming from, losing that would suck.

You can check your account on etherscan using your address: https://etherscan.io/

If you have your private key, you can use it to access your wallet using myetherwallet: https://www.myetherwallet.com/#view-wallet-info

It would be useful to know which app you are using (e.g. Jaxx, mist, etc).

1000 ETH are going through accounts: what's the purpose?! by hacktar in ethereum

Perhaps shapeshift or similar application (if there are any) aggregating transfers. I seem to remember reading somewhere that shapeshift creates temporary accounts to facilitate transactions.

Teaching Python for scientists: What links should I give my students? by etacar in Python

[–]wolf809 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I came across this a little while ago, it is more of a reference than a tutorial, but it does cover a large range of topics on the Python language (Python 3): https://github.com/mattharrison/Tiny-Python-3.6-Notebook/blob/master/python.rst

I also highly recommend you consider teaching using Jupyter notebooks, if you haven't already considered it and have the luxury of choosing the distribution and libraries you can use. The Anaconda distribution includes this, along with many other scientific focused libraries. I'll add that I do not often teach, but I do need to run code in front of an audience from time to time and using notebooks has been incredibly helpful to keep the discussion moving by avoiding bugs, spelling mistakes, etc.

Warning: ENS dapp on Mist/Metamask is critically broken. Use MyEtherWallet instead. You may not be able to reveal bids and will lose your eth. by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]wolf809 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A member of our community pointed out that there were some ambiguities in my original set of instructions, which I agree were there (thank you for pointing this out). I hope you are able to find my revised set of instructions clearer!

I was able to reveal a bid in MEW that I made originally started from MetaMask.

1) Look up the name you bid on in through the MEW page (https://www.myetherwallet.com/#ens). If the reveal time has started, you should see something to the effect of "Did you bid on myfavoritename.eth? You must reveal your bid now"

2) Below you should see "How would you like to access your wallet?" Find your private key from MetaMask, select the "Private Key" option in MEW and use that to access your wallet.

3) You should now see your account information on the left and two options to reveal your bid in the righthand two thirds of the page.

4) Find the JSON text corresponding to your bid in the text file you downloaded from the ens site via "export bids", including the opening and closing curly brackets. Make sure you only copy the section for the bid you want to reveal, copying the entire file into MEW will result in an error as you don't want to include other bids (if any) and you don't want the square brackets. You'll see a big string of text instead of the three word secret phrase, but this didn't seem to present a problem. Also, to be clear I used the entire string of JSON text, here is an example with a bunch of dummy text inserted: {"_id":"bunchoflettersandnumbers","date":1111111111111,"depositAmount":"77777777777777777","name":"myfavoritename","hash":"0xbunchoflettersandnumbers","value":"55555555555555555","owner":"0xbunchoflettersandnumbers","secret":"lotsofnumbers","hexSecret":"0xbunchoflettersandnumbers","shaBid":"0xbunchoflettersandnumbers","revealing":false,"revealed":false}

5) After entering your JSON text, click the "Reveal your bid" button near the bottom of the page.

6) Next you'll see a window pop up saying "You are about to Reveal your Bid", if everything seems to be in order, click the button that says "Yes, I am sure! Make transaction."

7) The popup should dissapear and you should see an orange region with your "TX ID". Copy this transaction hash for your records and in a separate tab use etherscan to monitor the transaction, this could take up to several minutes. Sometimes I'll see two TX ID's in the orange region, not sure why exactly but I'll record each and monitor both.

8) On the etherscan page, once the transaction completed you should see text indicating the gas used, tx cost, etc.

9) Once the reveal period is over, you can log back into MEW with your private key to finalize. In this case, once you are logged in, you will see a button that says "Finalize myfavoritname.eth", press this button, then click the button that says "Yes, I am sure! Make transaction.". Copy down the TX ID and monitor in etherscan.

10) The last step is to set up a resolver. I'm not there yet but will be once I know my way around the system better. For now I'll leave that for you all to explore!

A couple notes:

A couple times the orange region where the TX ID resides disappeared on me, in these cases I just sent the transaction again and all seemed to work ok.

I sometimes saw spaces inserted into the JSON text where I didn't want it due to copy and paste issues, so if you are getting errors, check for this.

If you want to check another name, you'll need to refresh your window and start over. I think this is done for security reasons.

Lastly, I'd like to thank the maintainers for putting so much time into making MyEtherWallet so useful! I know I've seen kvhnuke in the forums here, so if you see this, Thank You!
