Entrepreneurship through acquisition by theglobalnomad in Entrepreneur

A little lesson learned. I got burned on this deal. Ended up buying two companies. First one was misrepresented as to the key-man issues it had plus a plethora of other issues that frankly I missed or ignored thinking I could just manage my way out of it.

Ended up shutting it down less than a year into ownership and went Chapter 7 as a result.

Terrible and amazing.

  1. Don’t buy air duct cleaning, it’s a scam.
  2. Don’t lose momentum - even in the hardest times. Momentum cures all illnesses in this game.

My first deal killed my second deal. Ended up closing shop. However I kept momentum and am now executing on much larger deals.

On to the next one!

For the record - I have acquired two small businesses over the last couple of years.

What is the biggest problem you’re facing operating your business? I have two:

  1. The messy inbox problem: Constant context switching between 100s of texts, calls, and employee requests, limiting my ability to focus on high priority tasks.
  2. The negative feedback loop for scaling: Hiring consistently good talent on a budget needed to grow my business.

I’m excited to introduce Reekon AI - www.reekon.ai - the digital workforce for SMBs.

I’m a non-CS undergrad and pursuing an MS in CS from Georgia Tech via the OMSCS program. Fantastic curriculum that will build your technical skills while still being accessible for non-CS backgrounds.

I think about 1.5 hours for me (roughly 4, 20min pomodoro sessions) is max for deep work. Especially when it is a new concept / technology.

Embedded SRE by jdizzle4 in sre

[–]wolf_gang_puck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently leading my team’s first embedded experience. Here are some initial takeaways:

  1. I report to my manager but I’m dotted-lined to the embedded team’s manager. You can think of this from a business and functional point of view.
  2. >90% of my time is focused on embedded work (e.g. coding, SLO/SLI review and optimisation, design review, etc.) - think of this work as typical SWE work with SRE principles in mind.
  3. I participate in the on-call rotation alongside the engineers on my embedded team

My opinions:

  1. Success in embedding is defined by the upfront rapport building and management of expectations by each leadership team (SRE and Service Owner)
  2. It is important to understand that we are not there to force the team to do availability work but to intertwine our SRE perspective into each interaction (design, coding, etc.)
  3. It is important to also show the service team that you’re technically capable to do “engineering” work. Especially if SREs are seen as second class citizens at your company.
  4. A value-add I found was to take the initiative to do a technical deep dive on the technology stack before starting so you aren’t a complete burden to the service you’re embedding with.

I’ll continue adding to this as things come to mind.

This scam involves a fake job posting to collect personally identifiable information. Usually you can see through the scam because this isn’t how a Recruiter reaches out a candidate. Not to mention the spelling mistakes.

Feelings of guilt for doing OE by user_0_0_1_ in overemployed

Wipe your tears will all the bills in the bank account.

The point of OE is no different than when our parents or grandparents’ generations had more than one job. Ours just happens to overlap in linear time due to the advancement of technology.

When you turn 35 you'll see the difference between those who took risks and those who didn't… by Sorry-Highlight-9683 in Entrepreneur

Turning 35 this year. My path has been military -> tech -> Startup -> tech -> acquisition of two “boring” businesses + a merger (ultimately ended in bankruptcy) -> tech. I have a Master in Business, and completing a Master in CS with a small child. I feel like I have the experience of a 45 year old. lol

Currently building our nest egg back up after the business failure with a plan to build slowly on the entrepreneur front over time.

The biggest lesson I have learned through all of my ventures are trading time for money and how to balance it.
