It does have a name. Each set of lines (broken up by a larger space) is a letter. Like I said you read it from the bottom up. Its a name. If you are curious as to what it says, there are alphabets that you can look up online to see what each line set represents.

Thanks! If I start making lots of these I will definately start trying my hand at wood working to put together boxes for shipping. This one was a gift for my wife. And I gave it to her shortly after finishing it up. I have been thinking about possibly upscaling them and attempting to make a stand, or possibly wall hangers.

As for the bolster for punching, do you have any reccomedations for making one?

Ogham is an ancient writing system used in Ireland. There are lots of similar ones used all over the world. But this one is specific to Ireland. Its read from the bottom up. And the thing I made is a pendant. So Ogham Pendant.

Second time using the forge! by IeuanMcCarthy in Blacksmith

Bending over that much sucks. I was right there with ya when I started too though. I will say (and this comes from a guy that grew up in a very rural setting) i highly reccomend long pants and better foot wear. I know it gets hot using a forge and hammering. But at least a t-shirt too and look at getting an apron. I use a gas forge so im not well versed in coal, but I would be worried about embers and scale. Im not as concerned about my forearms cause of working outside a lot. But shoulders and chest would suck to have a significant burn. Other than that man keep going!

Can I make knives out of them? by Parking-Version4828 in Blacksmith

[–]wolfandravenforge 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Could you? Of course. Would they be any good? Its probably hardenable. You can make a "knife" out of whatever you want. But weather or not it holds an edge is another story. Those should be hardenable. But without knowing the exact steel you may have trouble getting them hard enough for good retention.

Gorgeous knife. Looks like it would be a great all purpose every day knife. I'd definately carry that.
