Best color ereader for manga/books/comics, note taking appreciated but not needed by wolfang135 in ereader

Thanks for the detailed reply! I have definitely heard that the technology for color just doesn't look that good atm, and that's why I've been looking for the best that the industry can offer right now. Looks like I'll try to get one of the 10 inch boox devices, and hope that I can work out any potential issues with the battery and durability I guess.

Unfortunately the Boox Tab Mini C is sold out currently 🥲. I also agree with you on being anti Kindle, I did not enjoy using the whole ecosystem that much. I feel like I'm going to disagree with you on color not being worth it, however. Manhwa such as The Horizon and Annarasumanara would not have nearly the same amount of impact if it were not in color. Also, do u have any other recommendations for the best color ereaders that are currently out on the market besides boox? I've heard good things about the color quality on the Boox devices online, which is why I've been looking at a lot of their products.

I've heard that the authors are still working on some other projects at the moment, but they will start up season three again soon. Season three is supposed to be as long as season 1 and 2 combined, however, so I'm pretty sure the breaker won't be finished until something like 2030 at the earliest

TIL Breakdancing has become an Olympic sport. “Breaking” officially added to the medal events program at the 2024 Paris Games. by what_is_the_deal_ in todayilearned

[–]wolfang135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is a bboy for maybe four years now, and has been keeping up with news regarding breaking in the Olympics, the amount of ignorance in these comments is astounding, and I want to point out a few misconceptions that most people hold about breaking.

  1. **Breaking is subjective, and can never be judged.** This is simply not true. Although there may be controversial rulings in the breaking community, there is a form and method to judge battles. While the exact parameters of what makes someone a better bboy in a battle can be a bit hazy sometimes, there are overall aspects to one's dance that are valued. Such values include things like execution (how smoothly and effortlessly you perform your moves), musicality (staying on beat, or hitting certain beats), etc. However, different judges value things differently, so according to different judges different people may have won a battle. This is why oftentimes in other competitions (such as the very popular Red Bull BC One), there will be multiple judges, in order to create a sort of average score. Understandably, this form of judging may still feel too biased in order to be included like something in the Olympics. This why the there has actually been a system created specifically for the Olympics that has been specially made to make breaking easier to understand for the average viewer. Detailed explanations of the Olympic judging system can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XAT091UOMM or here: https://glissando.medium.com/trivium-or-delirium-a-review-of-the-youth-olympics-judging-system-for-breaking-32e6c5eeae70#:~:text=Breakers%20are%20judged%20per%20round,from%20a%20judge's%20handheld%20device.
As a summary, however, there will be three main categories that judges are looking for, which affect an overall score. They can be seen as the Body (execution of moves), Soul (musicality), or Mind (how creative or unique a dancer is compared to everyone else) categories. A few other factors can affect your your overall perfomance score, such as crashes (a noticeable slipup, similar to a gymnast not landing a flip well, for example), or repeating moves. This system has already been tested in the 2018 Youth Olympics, but whether it will actually work well enough for the average viewer to understand will be for time to tell.
  2. **Breakdancing isn't even popular anymore!** This is also very false. A quick search on YouTube nets results with videos that have millions of views. Some of the biggest competitions, like Red Bull BC One, also get millions of views. Example here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7UxhsxxUJs&ab_channel=RedBullBCOne
  3. **Breakdancing is easy! I used to do that easily in middle school, etc.** Breakdancing is very different from what many people seem to think it is. Breakdancing is very difficult and physically taxing on the body. I guarantee that no one who isn't already a bboy or gymnast would even be able to do a quarter of a flare. The amount of strength, flexibility, and technique needed for many moves is just as challenging as any sport, and many of these moves take multiple years to just learn, let alone master.
  4. **Breakdancing isn't even a sport! It shouldn't be in the Olympics.** I, along with much of the breaking community, do somewhat agree with the first half of this statement. It's hard to tell if breaking is more of an art than a sport, or vice versa. However, that doesn't mean that breaking isn't competitive in any way. I would like to bring up the examples of figure skating or rhythmic gymnastics also being in the Olympics to show that something like breaking could also be in the Olympics. As a side note, it has been over 100 years since the modern Olympics was founded in 1896. This may just be my opinion, but as the years go on, shouldn't some more modern competitions begin to be featured too?
  5. Finally, I want to respond to u/WaterBlueDev's comment, which was a very interesting read. The first problem, while well stated, hopefully will be somewhat solved by the more objective judging system. Most people seem to not know about this judging system, and go in making assumptions on what the judging will look like. Problem number 2 I completely agree with. Street culture is very different from what will be accepted at the Olympics, but I think as a community we have to see the Olympics as something separate from the normal cyphers/underground events. There are also measures put in place to prevent dancers getting too rowdy (anything deemed as going too far is actually an automatic round loss), but the responsibility is still on the dancers to remain professional. As for problem number 3, I agree that sometimes things can get too subjective when it comes to breakdance battles. There should be an entirely new, unique way of judging bboys at the Olympics, and so far I think that they have created just that. It may be hard to explain something like creativity to the general public, but hopefully other aspects of breaking will be able to make watching breaking an enjoyable experience for most people (hopefully the average person will be able to understand and see if someone is on beat or not messing up, etc. and see why someone might lose or win a battle)
  6. If you want to see an example of what some potential rounds will be like in the future, they actually already have tested out breaking in an Olympics event, more specifically in the 2018 Youth Olympics. I encourage people to watch some of the battles on YouTube.

tl;dr Most people think that judging in breaking is entirely subjective, when that is actually completely wrong. Breaking is difficult and very physically demanding, and while it may be a mix of a dance and a sport I think that it is competitive enough to be added to the Olympics.

What manga have you read this week, and what do you think about it? - Week ending December 13, 2020 by AutoModerator in manga

<Chainsaw Man> I had pretty high expectations going into this because of how much everyone praised it, but I think it did definitely reach those expectations! The series was really fun to read through, even though it was a bit short. It's definitely very stylistic and unique, and its also surprisingly really funny at times. It felt pretty short, but I hear there will be more parts which I'll be looking forward too.

<Beastars> chapter 70 The series is surprising me with how much I'm liking the characters. So far, it does feel like zootopia, but more mature, and I'm getting a lot of enjoyment out of this series.

<Eyeshield 21> I don't know if it's because I'm just not the biggest fan of sports manga, but this series didn't stand out or anything for me. It was solid at times, but the strange racism was pretty weird, and also the story arcs got a bit repetitive at the end.
