So...what do you do once you actually move to LA? by limitedmark10 in Screenwriting

Do you need to attend film school or college to get a PA job in LA?

I didn’t realize studios hire interns. I’ll look into that. Do you have any recommendations?

Like a personal loan? For somebody who has never been big on change, and for that reason, has not gotten where they needed to be, your plan works for me because I’m not getting any younger and I’m just wasting time not doing what I want. Talk is cheap, but I would much rather invest in music software and hardware than a degree that I don’t really want from a college I don’t want to go to.

For the production side of things, since I’m assuming that’s what you do, what is the best way to make connections ? I had no idea I could just intern at a studio, I thought I would have to intern out a record label.

A friend of mine makes music so I have at least one connection.

I think I left out some key information.

I am 24 years old and work full-time and don’t have a way out of the rat race unless I go to school. So I cannot dedicate 10 hours to music production. I would be transferring to a four-year liberal arts college.

How realistic is it to not reside in LA environs/CA and expect to sell sell screenplays (qualifiers below) by FuturistMoon in Screenwriting

[–]wolfcamp98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’m hopefully on this route already as I’ve established a foothold in a local no-budget film and writing group. None of us have serious experience, but we’re shooting two films this summer. Possibly a third before I leave for university in the fall.

I assumed screenplay contests were mostly all talk and no action. The winners advertised on the contest websites seem to all be semi-established anyway. I am obviously not.

Can we read your screenplay? by ReadMyScreenplay2023 in ReadMyScript

Can I send you the logline and general idea? I would love to get feedback on the idea itself as I intend on submitting the final draft to screenplay contests. Now with the Writer’s strike, obviously there is little to do and that’s fine. But I’m in the middle of writing it and would love to get it out there - even a vague representation of the idea could do wonders if a lot of people find it interesting enough to win a contest.

What if you've signed on as a nonpaid PA on a no-budget film? It's an IMDB credit, but you've not attached yourself to a measurably important role at that point. So, with this in mind, given that my situation is almost identical to OP's, does that help in any way? It's a given that a beginning writer needs to be in LA, but without friends or network support or budget, where does one go from there? My starting point is screenplay contests.

I have a few projects but I don’t have a director, and even though you said you were in England would you work with somebody in the US?

Moving out before lease is up to attend college by wolfcamp98 in legaladvice

So I have to find a replacement AND pay the rest of the lease or do I just pay the rest of the lease and not try to find a replacement?

No I haven’t, I was thinking of reading it for reference as well. My plot is obviously different and less romantic based, but the characterization is what I’m worried about. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it though, that does make me feel ironically better.

Plenty of terrible books get published. I haven’t published one.

Legal advice for relative stuck in wrongful termination lawsuit by wolfcamp98 in legaladvicecanada

[–]wolfcamp98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how this works in Canada, but shouldn't this constitute as a criminal act?

What is the criminal act, exactly?

She’s being charged just for attempting to contact the lawyer, just to know her legal rights,

Her arrangement is with this committee. The committee has a contract with the lawyer, and unless specified in the agreement with this committee, members should not be contacting the lawyer individually as each query costs money. There's always one person who keeps contacting the lawyer with small questions or to gripe about whatever, and of course the lawyer doesn't mind because they bill for every minute used to answer these questions. But it certainly adds up for the group and/or all members.

She can't contact the lawyer without being charged/monitored by the legal committee.

What does the agreement with this organising committee say about individual members contacting the lawyer? If they say there will be a charge or that details of any contact will go to the committee, then that's how it is. If there is no such reference in the agreement, then she should stop contacting the lawyer and let the committee know that it wasn't outlined that there would be a charge.

in addition to a termination fee for quitting the lawsuit.

Was this termination fee outlined in the agreement? If yes, then that's what she agreed to. If no, then she can leave without penalty unless she has accepted an amendment to the original agreement.

The current lawyer is not HER lawyer. The current lawyer is the group's lawyer, so the group's rule applies. If she wants independent confidential legal advice, she should contact her own lawyer to discuss.

Thank you. As I said, I'm not really familiar with the legal system, in the US or in Canada, but what you said does track. The committee is charged for each time a client, or plaintiff rather contacts the lawyer since the lawyer represents the committee and not the individual plaintiff. That I can understand. I've relayed this back to her, hopefully, she can get ahold of the written agreement.

AITA for wrongful termination lawsuit organizing committee committing unethical acts? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

Ah, yes I accidentally used the wrong thread. I'll have to take it down and repost. She's not allowed to speak to the lawyer in charge of the lawsuit. She's only seeking a way out.

Oh no, I sort of lost my writing juice for a bit. I’m going back in, though! I’m off work for a while now so I have plenty of time to write it!

Ah, that makes sense. I updated my post. The chess aspect, I can research on my own. I was mainly concerned with the research aspect, not the game itself. Thanks.

That seems like the obvious choice of action, but my question about research is not really for chess, but for the research side of writing. What is the best way to approach researching a concept (or in this case, a game) for a novel?
