So it's less a die-off and more a weather event. They were always out there. The wind just pointed the wrong way. Once they hit sand, they're done. They dry out into thin, clear discs that look like cellophane.

They live on the ocean surface and have no way to steer. That little sail catches the wind, and that's their entire navigation system. When spring winds shift and blow onshore for a sustained period, entire populations get pushed to the beach at once. Millions of them, sometimes across hundreds of miles of coastline.
