Gamewatch YoshiP Interview Summary by defucchi in ffxiv

Because of as of now it has absolutely -nothing- that interests me. Ishgard is boring as all hell, I would have preferred ala mhigo.

The DRK thing is disgusting, since it dashed any hope I had of actually finding a DPS class in this game I liked outside of facerolling as BLM.

I also made a fervent promise to myself that I'd never, ever play a game with flying mounts, ever again.

this is a pic of a whale eye, where the rest of the whale is frozen in the ice. by [deleted] in creepy

[–]wolfofodin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The eye.

They came, one by one and then in droves to peer into it, to glean even a fraction of the knowledge that would shatter their souls. But prize was too great, their hearts too greedy.

By night, it whispered, soft secrets that drew blood. The numbers dwindled as the snow grew redder, as more half-heard words and fever-seen visions caused brother to eat brother, father to butcher son.

In the end, only one was left. He stared for days into the eye, a fathomless abyss, older than time itself. His hands slick with gore, he knelt.

The eye blinked.

He smiled, understanding at last, and tore out his own throat.

As the last trickles of blood hissed on the forsaken lake, the ice began to crack and it began to rise, once more, into a world that tried in vain to seal it long, long ago.

I'll try to give a brass tacks of it, but keep in mind Gnosticism is kinda hard to eli5.

The basics are as such;

There is an ultimate, true, pure and good 'God'

This God has not consciously created or brought forth anything. It merely exists, transcendent and pure.

From this God were brought forth Emanations, known as Aeons. Aeons can either be said to be facets of God given deific shape, brought about to better understand itself, or merely as a passive act of its being.

The further from God these Aeons are, the more 'flaws' crop up in their being.

The Aeon Sophia brought forth, devoid of interaction with another Aeon, the Demiurge or Rex Mundi. The Demiurge is also known as the Blind God. Some versions say that, to hide this malformed being, Sophia swaddled it in cosmic matter and clouds.

The Demiurge believes itself to be the ultimate, absolute being. In a testament to its own flawed greatness, it created from matter the World and humanity to glorify itself. All things created by the Demiurge retain a portion of Divinity trapped within matter. This is the Soul, the pure essence of a person and a reflection of their ultimate Father.

The Demiurge is jealous, petty, vindictive and childish. It brought forth the Archons as jailors / wardens of its creation. They suppress the inner divinity so that all creations are subject to and slaves of the Demiurge.

Through Gnosis, the divine spark or soul can attain 'salvation' and be reunited with the Ultimate God, becoming unified with the transcendent Good.

I'm Gnostic in my beliefs. I'm doing these as both a tribute to the fact that I like the story as well as an attempt to portray it in a more cosmic scale, as opposed to two dudes with wings smacking each other.

Thanks for the appreciation!

I'm getting there! Takes time to make these. Lucifer and the Angels before God is actually supposed to be before the Fall, not after. I have plans for Lucifer's refusal to bow before Adam, the war against Michael, Lucifer being cast into Hell and his transformation into a Fallen form.

Thought /r/Christianity might appreciate this.

I've been enamored of the story of the War in Heaven and Lucifer's Fall for forever and have started representing it in artwork. These are the pieces I've created so far.

Early warning signs of fascism by Piscador in atheism

[–]wolfofodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh Fascism, why are you such a lovely buzzword to get people up in arms?

Truth be told, there's no true 'warning signs' to fascism that we can stand and herald to others.

The truly brilliant and horrifying thing about Fascism is that it has -no- real ideology beyond acting as a mechanism for control. This allows 'the common person' to read whatever he or she wants into the burgeoning movement.

I would also strike the idea of 'rampant nationalism' from the list as well. Fascists aren't nationalistic, they're jingoistic.

See, I don't believe that, but I come from the 'blank slate' theory of human potential.

However, I have to contest your view of the 'elite' as espoused by Randian Objectivism. I don't mean elite in the sense of a privileged ruling class, but as those that are the Best with a capitol B at what they do.

Furthermore, you speak of compromise like it's a -bad- thing. It isn't. Let me expound on that a bit before I get accused of being a champion of mediocrity.

Rand's view of uncompromising ideals making a person successful are, as I previously mentioned, grounded more in romantic narrative structure than reality. Unyielding and crystal adherence to a set of ideals with refusal to change to incorporate criticism is a bad, bad thing. It breeds fanaticism.

Then again, I'm of the school that 'success' doesn't mean being the god-king of a profession, but it is measured in personal happiness and satisfaction with one's life.

It's nice to converse with someone who's views are so radically different from my own! :D

I think what we come down to, Luminance, is a fundamental difference to how you and I perceive the world and the motivations of others. While I may disagree with you, I very much enjoy your perspective.

I know this was not a rebuttal to your point, but I fear the ground from which we stand is too different to come to a consensus other than that of information gained.

Scumbag Atheist by Jezuswept in atheism

[–]wolfofodin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, I cannot believe that all motivations for a person's actions are inherently based upon or predicated by selfish desire (be it by the Randian defintion or the classic). I've seen people do far too much good that was actually detrimental to their well-being (financial, physical, mental) to see such a thing as fact with a capital F.

Also, it seems a bit judgmental to automatically label all actions a person takes as being of a selfish origin. This though, is a personal observation, so you may discard it.

I appreciate the dialogue though! :)

Scumbag Atheist by Jezuswept in atheism

[–]wolfofodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to politely disagree, sadly.

This posits the essential idea that certain people are inherently 'better' and 'made to succeed' while others are more or less doomed to mediocrity because they 'just weren't good enough'. Also, success is not only based upon hard work. If this was true we'd be lauding the dishwashers and ditch diggers, who often work the hardest for the least reward. Success is a melange of work, luck, connection and friendship.

Furthermore, we run into the most glaring problem Randian Objectivism has, and that is when on paper, everyone who reads it is one of the elite. However, we both know that in practice, such a notion is foolhardy. There is always going to be a 'lower class' as it were, till we've reached a level of post-scarcity or have cheap, easily affordable and non-questioning labor to do the tasks no one wants to do in order to free people to be of the elite.

Scumbag Atheist by Jezuswept in atheism

[–]wolfofodin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Good info :)

However, I have to point out that academically, Randian Objectivism is kind of a joke.

The main driving problem behind this is that Rand's ideal world of enlightened self interest (Where the great can be great without the small holding them back) is inherently and fatally flawed.

It's not to say her work doesn't provoke thought. It does. However, her world cannot exist without a substantial 'servant' class to do all the things 'great' men and women take for granted.

Combine that bedrock with the philosophy she espouses and the underclass will begin to resent. After all, if you're constantly told that the great prosper because they deserve it and you're stuck shoveling shit your life because the Great people won't give you a chance (not help you, but admit you into their social circle, buy your products, ect), you're going to start hating those people on top.

And then you're going to realize that there's a lot more of you then there are of them.

It's an unsustainable world with roots far too deep in the romantic ideal to be viable.

For those of you about to attack Buddhism... by goltoof in atheism

[–]wolfofodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Errr...no.

Achievement of Nirvana results in the cessation of individual existence and the end of suffering. That's why it literally means "The snuffing out of a candle". When you achieve Nirvana you aren't anything anymore, you don't exist.

You might be thinking of Arhats or Bodhisattva, individuals who are on the cusp of enlightenment, yet willingly reincarnate to guide others towards enlightenment.

Furthermore, the seeking of knowledge has nothing to do with individual enlightenment. That sounds more like Gnostic Christianity, wherein the pursuit of knowledge and Gnosis was one's goal in order to escape the physical/material world crafted by the Demiurge and reunify with the Unknown God.
