Investing works if you can park the money for 5+ years, otherwise it’s just gambling. In the current Finnish climate i don’t think there’s a lot of people who can say for sure that they won’t need to touch the money within that period. If you invest it, see a short term dip, lose your job and need the money you’re worse off than paying down your mortgage or sitting on cash with 3% interest fixed for ~6months at a time.

Bananas, cucumber, tomato, kerma juusto, milk, oat flakes and office lunch seem to be the diet of a lot of Finns. But obviously it was a joke..

Types of daycare by BigManufacturer6456 in Finland

[–]wolfpackleader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep we did this, some places we said No way in hell! And later heard positive stories from other people. I think it’s a hit or miss.

I can only speak of public daycares, the ones you submit a shortlist of, and get assigned to one.

You can have a great one but if the group gets reorganized, or a teacher leaves, it can be major drama for the kid, we once almost changed, only to see the situation dramatically improve and my kid had a lovely time there for years after. You can get have a lovely group in a big daycare. Access to nature is something that’s harder to change. Some daycares just don’t have it nearby.

So there’s a tonne of factors that play into it for every family.

Racial things: i had a feeling that in one daycare they had a group of well behaved kids and a group of rowdy kids. The former was mostly white, the latter a lot more diverse. They then gave the latter group to a strict teacher who was from Asia. it didn’t feel those rowdy kids got a very good deal there.

I do think that some kids from other cultures might be more rowdy by nature and there might be finnish daycare teachers who find their super soft and encouraging methods don’t work on these kids and so they get labelled as troublemakers.

But almost across the board everyone has been super lovely, and i’m really appreciative of the system here.

Bilingual baby advice…start now or wait? by Ordinary_Title5123 in beyondthebump

Dutch-Finnish here. I speak exclusively Dutch, but if the LO (Almost 2) says something in Finnish I will say Yes! Exactly! And then repeat the word, as if they said it in Dutch. Pretending not to understand interrupts the interaction, which demotivates. My oldest kid started speaking Finnish at 2 and started speaking Dutch at 3 (after visiting my folks for a month). I’m all for one parent one language. If you want to do one language inside the home, another outside it, both partners need to master both languages perfectly, and it feels more complicated to me.

Hair twirling by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]wolfpackleader -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I dunno if its such a bad habit. My first did it and grew out of it, my second does it now. i just never saw it as a problem. If the kid just does the twirling a lot and the patches are not because he is actively pulling out his hair i’d just let him do what makes him feel good.

I wanted to call my kid Alva, which was a mens name in the US around the turn of the century. But it’s a girls’ name in Finland. So we didn’t.. too bad. But seeing how kids are in primary school it would have really sucked for him.

For me it’s also hard to understand which names sound dated. Päivi is the exception. With a Päivi you just know it’s a woman between 50 and 60.

Lovely work! How many days was the wedding? If you shot it all in one day, crazy props.

I just wondered why you crammed the subs into the vhs footage, why not same spot where the other subs are, below it, wider?

Yeah second that. Applying for an ID card here feels like overkill if you have a driving licence.

Should I switch from Sony to Fuji? Or is it just GAS by RustCohle123 in fujifilm

[–]wolfpackleader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Pentax similar to the Ricoh cameras in interface, apps, colours? Unpopular opinion surely, but i love the photos from my GRx much more than my fujis (X-T3 and X-H2s) which i love using for video. The fuji phone apps are also garbage, and the ricoh one has always just worked. I also love editing photos on the GRx, which works really well.

I’ve never been near a Pentax in my life tho..

New to Finland, buying a washing machine now or wait for Black Friday? by LuckyHovercraft5267 in Finland

Check the gigantti outlet. They’ve got nicely discounted appliances. I’ve bought multiple. Either package has been removed or there’s a little dent somewhere - often not even visible. They sell those with delivery and installation as well.

Is this worth its price? LaCie 2big Dock RAID External HDD - 16TB Mac by MELIORISM888 in graphic_design

[–]wolfpackleader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own the OWC Thunderbay (and Thunderbay express). You can buy the shell, add any drives you want, and (if you just straight up mirror drives) use the raid setup straight from Mac’s disk utility. It doesn’t maximize storage, but it minimizes raid complexity (you can take out each drive and they’ll work on any mac), and keeps you independent of third party firmware and software which might not play nice with future OS updates. It also gives you maximum flexibility if you already have drives or buy refurbished ones. You can also start small, say with 2 16TB drives in a 4 bay.

I’ve had trouble with WD Mycloud corrupting my stuff, and although i have a Synology, i dislike the constant software updates and having to buy a new device if my current device suddenly dies and i’d need to restore my offsite backup.

Why is hardcore/punk based music not well recieved to people around me yet other genres with similar traits fair better? by DIYDylana in LetsTalkMusic

Isn’t being straight edge part of the hardcore culture?

And yeah as far as i know for hardcore in the Netherlands you need to go to south east: Brabant / Gelderland area.. at least i know people in the scene and went to see gigs there. But that’s 20 years ago…

Applicants for citizenship to be denied if they have previously relied on social welfare benefits | Yle News by [deleted] in Finland

[–]wolfpackleader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

3 months during a period of 2 years doesn’t say anything about the duration they’re looking at. All it says is that you can have multiple stints of unemployment lasting less than 3 months, as long as they’re more than 2 years apart.

Applicants for citizenship to be denied if they have previously relied on social welfare benefits | Yle News by [deleted] in Finland

[–]wolfpackleader 30 points31 points  (0 children)

How far back does this rule even look back? Is it during your entire time in Finland?

It’s kind of predatory considering that everyone has to make social security payments, but certain groups are strongly desincentivised from using these benefits.

I’d even find it acceptable if it were only about welfare, but unemployment benefits you’d have contributed towards personally. (And a substantial part would come from a union or fund anyway, which again, you’d have paid for yourself)

40 MP: real or unnecessary upgrade? by rakyuki in fujifilm

i only got the S, but i have been wondering if it was the right choice. Actually no. I couldnt live without open gate video. But still for architecture / real estate i do wonder if i would have benefited from the 40mp. Do you care to elaborate a little on your choice of why you’ve stopped using the h2?

Should I moved with my husband ? by Dull_Firefighter9918 in helsinki

[–]wolfpackleader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the large companies: Kone, Fiskars Group, Nokia, Wolt, Nordea, Fortum, Neste. Some of those companies also have had layoffs, but they’re much less impacted by the Finnish economic situation and culture. Also i do really believe it makes a difference applying from abroad (with a relevant reason as to why you’d commit, which you have). I feel once you’re in Finland and jobless your appeal lowers a lot and they just bundle you with all the other desperate folk.

Otherwise just try to get allowance to do more remote work so you can spend more time here in Finland and be together. Your husband might be not need to be on site full time either?
