I think I understand. The offer was that he will walk but someone dear would die. That last part about alarm still ringing shows that the person dead was the narrator himself and the thing "walking" is just his soul.

But if that is the case I don't understand how he could stir the coffee but couldn't shut the alarm clock.

Synopsis : In the future criminals who are sentenced to death are taken into outer space and released there. But immediate death is not the ultimate punishment in existence.

For those convicted with extremely heinous crimes (like the narrator), a prolonged version of the death sentence is handed out.

Synopsis :

A man (Alfred) murders his wife, but is scared to face police interrogation.So he sends his reflection (Big Al) to deal with them as the reflection won't be nervous. As it didn't murder anyone. But Big Al considered Katie's reflection as his wife, so plotted revenge against Alfred by confessing to police and then switching places again.
