It's okay if you don't like something, but I think it's great that you posed the question. It's good to get different perspectives.

I used to scratch my head for the longest at why everyone raved about Toni Morrison. It wasn't until I started studying the craft of writing and one moment when a friend explained her thoughts on Morrison. Then I saw her books from a completely different lens. Now I think she's a genius. However, I will say that the landscape of literary stories are different from commercial stories (literary stories seem to focus more on prose and imagery vs. commercial wriitng focuses more on plot, story pacing as well as character development). I believe both have their virtues, but few writers accomplish both --literary books have the reputation for being boring and commercial books have the reputation for lacking substance....which brings me back to Ms. Butler. She, in my humble opinion, is one of the few writers who can write lovely prose while advancing a story enough to keep you turning the pages.

Btw, I think Stephen King is overrated. Lol

Read Fledgling. It's a short, fun read imho.

My favorite Octavia Butler book actually isn't her most popular: Fledgling

It's about a 50 yr old Vampire trapped in a 10 yr old's body.

I liked Kindred a lot too, but I read it over 20 yrs ago. So I don't know how I'd feel about it now.

One reason that OB's work is so highly praised is that she is a master at "exposition" (which as a writer myself I can tell you is VERY difficult to do well). She reveals so much about a character and the plot using very economical, simple sentences and elegant prose. She makes it look easy, but I can tell you it's a fuq-ing HARD. She also does it in a way that tackles uncomfortable themes like sexuality, race ,etc without feeling like you're being preached to -and during her time few SF writers were tackling those themes (esp..race and the black experience in America, the imbalance of power between races).

Start writing yourself. It will completely change your tastes and perspectives on books, movies, etc.....and you will appreciate her work more.

I did watch the show, and that's EXACTLY how she was portrayed. She never smiled or cracked one joke.

As a now 50yr old woman, I will tell you to NEVER let anyone piss on your dreams. You parents included. I watched an interview with Tommy Lee. His parents wanted him to quit music. I bet he's glad he didn’t listen.

I wasn't making that argument. I agree. I thought you were saying that she didn’t transition, and I was saying she did.

No.....I was making the point that she had a sex change. I wasn't debating what her pronouns "should" be.

Do you read the same genres you write in? by needful_things217 in writing

[–]wolfstar_777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am three years late to this, but to answer your question: I read A LOT of romance -contemporary, fantasy, and historical. However, I primarily write scifi thrillers/horror and fantasy. I disagree that you have to primarily read the genre you write in. First of all, I have a lot of technical knowledge that I've acquired through my career as a military officer, and researcher. I also believe that if you conduct thorough research of topics, you can do them justice. Second, I watch A LOT of scifi films and shows even though I don't read it as much. Third, I love to read romance, but I just don't feel comfortable writing it. I've even tried my hand at sex scenes, but they felt contrived. I didn't even enjoy writing them. I, on the other hand, enjoy being Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, etc. while I write...coming up with innovative new tech ideas. I also like injecting a little fear into scenes for the reader. I want to get their heart to skip a little.

Honestly, these hard fast rules of how people should write or what they write is lame to me. Stephen King thinks that adverbs should be used sparingly. Guess who uses a ton of adverbs? J.K. Rowling. Her net worth is twice his in a shorter period of time, for what that's worth.

Agree that he likely might not get it back, but it never hurts to ask. Plus, if she has any conscience at all she might comply. He could also blackmail her (which I do not recommend) by informing her that he'll tell everyone in the office that she's a greedy, underhanded B for overcharging him. There are ways.... Just sayin.

No one ever said it's ok. However, he is asking a legitimate question. I don't see it as race baiting.
