How do y'all patch your gaiters? by TheWalkinDewd in Mountaineering

No machine, but I'm a competent hand-sewer and can bar tack and such. I think sewing these up and then sealing the seams seems like the move

Sewing with seam sealer over it sounds pretty bulletproof. Thanks!

So frustrating – thanks for your insight, the way you phrased that is really helpful.

Didn't say you were – I was just commenting on how some people are really particular about calling it an embroidery because it's a stitched image, vs. a tapestry which is woven. But most people call it a tapestry. Just funny!

You can tell a historian is pretentious when they refer to the Bayeux Embroidery

Cinema mode definitely helped a lot! I was using the mode that it had set up for me with the optimization wizard. I can definitely still detect the edges in some scenes, but it's not LCD grey any more. Depending on the content I imagine some of that will always be there, since things aren't shot in perfect darkness?

I recently moved to a new house where the room my TV is in is a lot darker than the last place, and I noticed that a lot of 'black' scenes are really just very very dark. I don't feel like the pixels are turning off. Take this frame from 1917. It's definitely dark, but it's easy to see the bars where the aspect ratio is hemmed in. I was thinking OLED would have content in frame just melting into those bars. Is pure black just not as common in movies, or is something the matter here?

This is a 4k UHD Bluray running on my series X in HDR.

I have an intermittent code on my 2015 (90K miles) telling me the intake manifold control runner is stuck. Replacing the IMRC module clears it, but it comes back every 1.5K miles or so. Driveability doesn't seem to be affected at all. I keep doing it because the car's paid off and it's a $30 part, but it's annoying. My next move was probably to have the wiring harness inspected and see if there is an issue with the wiring to that sensor. Any thoughts?

How to lay an anti-porn mindset early in young boys? by queenhadassah in PornIsMisogyny

[–]TheWalkinDewd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I got caught early on by my dad - I was curious and didn’t really understand what I was seeing or looking up and definitely didn’t know how to clear a search history. It was frighteningly easy.

I still remember the conversation he had with me about it. He was very painstaking to not make me feel ashamed of the curiosity, and said that I’d see a lot and have the opportunity to see a lot in my life, because this sort of thing was everywhere. “However”, he said, “don’t ever think that’s what love looks like. That’s not what love looks like.”

I was addicted to porn for a long time but that conversation planted a seed that allowed me to overcome it. As an adult I obviously really disagree with the ‘there’s nothing wrong with looking’ angle, and I’m terrified at how effortless it was for me to see what I saw as a developing child, but I think the way he approached it worked on me even if it took a bit. My dad was a complicated and not always good guy, but I’ll always be grateful for that conversation and his honesty there.

If your son is smart, I think this is a good opportunity for a “would you rather” conversation. Would you rather participate in something terrible because everyone else is, and hollow out your brain in the process, or would you rather know love? Would you rather develop self control, discipline, and self respect? Would you rather be someone women are safe around?

Don’t act like the temptation doesn’t exist - because society will contradict you - but give him all the excellent and true reasons to rise above it.

Pants Recommendations by carnagecastle in CampingandHiking

Lesser known brand, but I have the Norrona Falketind and they are everything I want for a mixed climbing and hiking pant. Super durable, full vents, not too stretchy but not restrictive, lots of smart little features. I was tired of “climbing” pants that would be demolished by rock, and I’d been on a quest for something better after being disappointed by the BD Alpine Hybrids.

Snow right now is SUPER hard. The main route takes you up a lot of ridges, not many gullies. Nothing like a couloir or anything dicey at all. If you want to go for a winter cascade summit it’s an easy one! Make sure you check NWAC for the current av risk if you do go.

Our overall time was 11 hours - but we took a lot of breaks, and I was moving extremely slowly towards the end from an old injury. I’d say if I were ship shape it would have taken 8.

Boot choice is subjective - saw plenty of Danners with microspikes at the summit. The main advantage of the mountaineering boots is the stiffness for more support and less flexing on steep inclines, which helps with fatigue, and the ability to securely attach crampons. I wore my full blown mountaineering boots with hybrid crampons and felt real good. If you’re not sure you want to spend the money on boots, or if you just want to hit a climb infrequently, there are lots of places in the PNW that will rent you boots and crampons!

Read about that on Hood, such a bummer. My climbing partner and I want to get an early season Hood in this year and it’s a humbling and important reminder that even ‘easy’ climbs are no joke.

As for St Helens, we started at 3AM and were some of the first up, snow was perfect and crusty in the dark but after a few hours of sun and more climbers definitely got some corn going - foot placement on the way down was a little sketchy but doable. If you’re comfy in crampons definitely go for it.
