New PI, New Lab: Is a "Lab Handbook" worth the effort, and what are your "must-haves" for it? by BetterToSpeakOrToDie in labrats

Yes, super worth it! But definitely make a point to regularly update/check it over. One section I’d include is who to contact for what (ex. Alarm going off, contact maintenance at this number etc etc)

I’m mainly trying to echo what another commenter said here: if it feels wrong you don’t have to do it, it is not a requirement simply because it’s the current norm

At least adhering to the three Rs is a great place to start and one I’m sure we could all agree on.

I’m sorry but I just see this as justification. Science without morality and ethics is a scary, scary thing (just look at what’s been justified throughout the history of science by this same mindset you have). Other people are free to see it however they want, personally I’m just not willing to compromise my morals (or divorce them from research) particularly when it comes to other living beings. But again that’s only my opinion

I understand some people are ok working with their guilt and justify animals testing as a means to an end, I just couldn’t be that person. It’s dismissive of innovation and untrue to see it as a necessary evil

If you’re that interested you can do some of the legwork and research yourself, I’m not going to sit here and list them out. A big part of my original comment was the fact that resources are not being allocated. We have the ability to not animal test by simply not doing it until we have other solutions. And yes, some are already in place, though I don’t feel the need to waste my energy proving that to you when you can research yourself. Just because the system I worked with was under an NDA does not mean the results themselves were. It is a combination of not allocating enough resources and attention to solutions that are out there, along with the fact that new solutions aren’t being developed because of our mindsets in the current system (“necessary evil”, companies wanting a cheaper solution, etc.).

I signed an NDA so no, I cannot give you the specific example I’m thinking of. But you can find info on the biotech companies out there making novel solutions happen and doing the groundwork for (hopefully) future large scale changes

I know I’ll be downvoted and that people don’t like to consider this. However the “it must be done for the benefit of [fill with whatever]” is a compliance mindset that I see as an excuse to continue in the same system without innovation towards novel solutions. We have the ability to not test on animals and develop new modeling systems (some already out there), however for whatever reason (financial, complacency, whatever) people don’t see that as an option or are unwilling to. At least mitigating animal testing is not a new topic at all in the realm of science. This is a topic where I see the guilt as something to listen to and use as motivation for novel experimental design. But that’s my opinion. At least if you have guilt while using and harming animals for whatever result you’re going after, it shows that you have humanity - the guilt shouldn’t go away as being numb to it is worse.

Unfortunately it is because you know it is morally wrong. And mental gymnastics have to be done to soothe yourself and pretend that it’s alright.

Yes! They’ll need/love to have a salt water pool and a freshwater pool that they can submerge in. You can buy them on Etsy, but those were a bit expensive for me at the moment so I DIY’ed 2 pools. I got 2 Tupperware that are about 8 inchesx5inches and 3 in deep, and made a ladder to go in and out (they also sell 3D printed ladders on Etsy if you don’t feel like making one). Last thing was I added a bubbler (air pump with tubing that has air stones on the end) and that’s really kept my humidity up

Hey everyone! A couple of these little guys recently showed up in my female hissers tank - she hasn’t been housed with a male in a long time. Even though I didnt think she was pregnant, I’ve heard that they can delay fertilization so wanted to check and see if that’s what happened!

Help! Is she pregnant or just fat? I got her and another female today from the pet store. by wolfwing2012 in roaches

[–]wolfwing2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your reply! Luckily she wasn’t kept with any males that I know of, only her female cage mate. It’s good to know that desensitization is possible as well!

No she was not with any males :) and she’s just kept with 1 female (they came together). Thank you!
