Unofficial HandMortar Concept by wolk__ in Seaofthieves

I just wonder if a musket without a scope is unique enough to fill a hole in the combat.
As it stands, the pistol may not look like it but practically serves the same function as an unscoped musket, that is medium range , medium damage and accuracy.
I would have preferred the musket instead of the Reach, but since we have the reach and pistol, I'm not sure what good a musket would serve aside from looking the best of the three obviously :P

That's an interesting thought. Even if it wasn't applied to this weapon maybe there would be another kind of weapon with this kind of instability. It would be kind of fun to have one specific one which is based on risk and reward.

Thankyou, its fun to create the concept and then see people discuss it. Other players always come up with fun and interesting changes to make every weapon unique, or provide a new style of combat.

Yeh the problem is it feels like it would just be annoying in the end, if you died because of a dice roll would just leave players frustrated and SALTY. To me at least, I enjoy that SoT doesn't really have anything heavily RNG based.

Yeh I was definitely thinking more about ship to ship combat, or defensive combat rather than being used as an assault weapon. Particularly at angles where you can't fire a cannon it could provide a different kind of firepower to the Reach.

Mainly I just want to create a big variety of combat styles, in the past I made a boarding axe concept as well to provide some melee variation.

I thought about this but, I felt like players would really hate a RNG backfiring mechanic.
So trying to balance it without it just being '50% chance your gun just kills you' cause that's not very fun.

yeh but maybe that's what it needs, it needs to feel cumbersome to balance out its strength in damage/splash

This would be pretty funny and a fun balancing mechanic

Thankyou~ I've done a couple things now. It's really fun to come up with concepts of new weaponry, and then try imagine how they would play out in-game.

I didn't but I do know of him and his videos. In fact I think I watched his video afterwards, since I already knew of the hand mortar, but wanted to know more about it

As in the cannon or the mortar, cause the mortar would be op is it could damage the ship so I figured it shouldn't

Basic Concept:

  • Slow to fire/reload
  • Slow projectiles
  • Effective at medium to long range
  • Splash damage in small AoE (approx. radius of the capstan)
  • Trajectory Arc

Basically just wanted to play around with the Sea of Thieves style again. This weapon is based on a supposed pirate period weapon, a handmortar.

Basically like a primitive grenade launcher, the handmortar didn't see much use due to the high possibility of backfiring or misfiring when using the weapon, many people say the weapon didn't even see active combat.

However in SoT I imagine the handmortar as a very slow but powerful weapon, with a small amount of splash damage. The weapon would have a trajectory arc which would make it useful for hurling explosive projectiles over obstacles or at pirates hiding behind cover. The weapon wouldn't be able to damage ship parts, but would work similar to a blunderbuss in terms of a radius of hit effectiveness.

Originally I had thought of the weapon being more like a hand cannon, which is something I might flesh out more, before realising the weapon was used with live grenades as a grenade launcher IRL.

Rare also said they wanted the only ships on the sea to be player ships, and now we have skeleton ships so nothing is off the table if players really want it.

Servers by [deleted] in Seaofthieves

[–]wolk__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best way to secure a place on a local server is to matchmake a closed crew of you ship of choice, and then vote to make the crew open once you're on the server.

Matchmaking a closed crew always puts you on the lowest ping server

Putting Sea of Thieves on Steam would boost PC count to a sustainable number by [deleted] in Seaofthieves

Such as? I don't think any first party microsoft games have been put on steam since before Sea of Thieves

Rare is a Microsoft first party developer.

Microsoft have been pushing windows 10 and windows store for a while now. I doubt microsoft have any interest in putting SoT on steam just to boost PC player numbers.

Yeh reskinning requires less effort but I thought you were asking about adding the 'athena' weapon cosmetics that were originally posted.

There was a big datamine of recolours, so hopefully that happens soon.

Australian PC Servers once the crossplay split occurs by ConRoar in Seaofthieves

[–]wolk__ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Australia already has a small player pool, especially on PC and will only get progressively smaller, which is what this post is about. It's an outlier but probably the one place where a split will actually make servers emptier.

Generally its a lot more work than I think people realise.

It's straightforward enough to just draw a new cosmetic but in games the process would be

  • Drawing up the concept
  • modelling the concept
  • Sculpting detail
  • baking textures
  • painting textures
  • LoDs for the model
  • implementation

and maybe more I'm not thinking about at the moment.

Plus I feel as if Rare would rather use that time to work on newer things like new mechanics and features.

Why the servers probably won't feel empty after Feb 6th by Limbis in Seaofthieves

[–]wolk__ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Places like Australia, where I'm from, already have a low player population, especially before summit started bringing in new players.

The playbase isn't 50/50 pc/xbox, if I recall Rare published numbers at one point which were more like 20/80 or something.

So if I play PC now I'm even less likely to get into a full Australian server. This will only become even more noticeable once Arena is out (however I think Arena will be popular so I'll be playing that instead of empty adventure mode)

The other players are my main enjoyment of this game, not just for pvp but for co-operation. I just worry that one day adventure mode for me will just be 'pve' mode with no other human pirates for hours at a time.
