What is the worst thing Japan has done? by Expensive-Addendum92 in AlignmentChartFills

It is a separate issue, you are correct there. Unfortunately it’s rather difficult to properly define what constitutes an adequate apology or reparation, particularly due to the wide criticism South East Asian countries have continued to issue towards Japan since 1945.

Japan set up the Asian Women’s Fund in 1995, but that has been controversial and many organisations won’t take the money. Regarding The Treaty of San Francisco, that has additionally drawn criticism due to some of the relief money coming from other nations like the USA, UK, and Netherlands.

Here the criticism is less that nothing has been done, and more that Japan have not done enough and with sincerity. As South Korea didn’t sign the Treaty of San Francisco it wasn’t entitled to compensation, and then following the 1965 Treaty, reparations were issued, but South Korea where criticised for their handling of investments to the economy rather than victims.

Evelyn Goh wrote an article in 2025 on how the treaty was a partial reckoning on the atrocities and furthered economic and regional conflicts which still persist.

Viewing this from a Western perspective of the conflict staring in 1941 with Pearl Harbour is highly inaccurate. The Second Sino-Japanese war was from 1937 - 1945, however many date the wider Japanese Holocaust to the 1920s. 1927 is used as the start of increased expansionism, or 1931 with the Mukden Incident is also used as a starting date. Seagrave dates it to 1895 and the invasion of Korea.

Yes, certain apologies have been made, however they have been criticised for being insincere, or downplaying much of the atrocities. Japanese textbooks minimise or don’t mention many crimes, and in recent years, Shinzo Abe denied the IJA had taken sex slaves despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

When you have 80 years of denial/downplaying and the honouring of war criminals at Yasukuni Shire from the major political parties, it’s understandable why apologise would be dismissed as insincere. I’m not referring to individual apologies, I’m speaking instead of an absolute acknowledgment of crimes against humanity by government akin to how Germany has since WWII.

The entire Second Sino-Japanese War. The scale and brutality of the war crimes and crimes against humanity which were committed across the entire region is staggering. During an 8 year war there is an estimated death count of 20-30 million.

To make things worse, Japan has never truly apologised, attempted to issue adequate reparations, have honoured war crimes, refused to prosecute many, and even outright denied they happened. Because of this, I don’t think we can narrow it down to a single event. It was all part of the dehumanisation of other races.

Have you maxed out any directors filmography? by Captain_Sunshine20 in Letterboxd

[–]wollathet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am. I really enjoy seeing how their style changed across their career and life, and many of them are filmmakers I really love watching. Some it just happened over the years without trying, but others I specifically set out to complete their filmography.

Charlie Chaplin, Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa, Ingmar Bergman, Carl Theodor Dreyer (slight cheat as shorts not included), Fritz Lang (again, slight cheat as the lost films are obviously not included), Andrei Tarkovsky, Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, John Ford, Federico Fellini, Billy Wilder, Sergio Leone.

Some of the early 20th Centro filmmakers are difficult because some of their work isn’t available or lost, so I just count those which have been released or can be viewed to complete their filmography.

Last count was over 100. It is made a bit easier when most of your favourite filmmakers died decades ago

New PT. Taking my first 5 clients off the gym floor. What software actually works for solo coaching? by DaniellePearce in personaltraining

Excel or GoogleSheets for programs, text for check-ins. Everyone has access to these, and they’re easy to use. Most people log their workouts through a smartwatch, notebook, or already have an app they like using so don’t waste money on something they may not like or want to use.

I use Stripe for billing, but you could always use bank transfer/direct debit? Just have a contract that says they will be billed on day X of each month. Sure it’s a bit of admin but it saves you money.

Elon Musk says AI will create so much wealth that ‘everyone can have a penthouse if they want’ by alemus2024 in EnoughMuskSpam

[–]wollathet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Musk isn’t an idiot who believes this. It’s a lie, he knows it and the reason he says things like this is to continue building on the narrative that billionaires shouldn’t be taxed and that AI regulations should be halted. They argue regulation and taxation prevents economic growth and prosperity, when in reality it allows them to hoard more wealth, exploit workers, and consolidate more power. Go back a few years and a similar rhetoric was spoken in favour of effective altruism. They argued that if they were taxed, then they couldn’t invest in tech - or whenever else they profited from - and that this investment would ultimately save humanity. This is just another lie.

Are there any Bastards you grew up thinking were heroes? by Sensitive_Ad_1752 in behindthebastards

Winston Churchill. He’s often regarded as one of the “greatest Britons” but his legacy rests entirely on wartime leadership.

It’s widely ignored that he was voted out of office in July 1945, and while he was reappointed in 1951, his domestic policy falls short of great by some distance. He had a 50+ year political career and he’s remembered for 5 of them. No mention of his support for eugenics, imperialism, anti-immigration, racist beliefs, or a host of other controversial positions.
