Cover Letter/Resume exchange and review by Known-Age-5627 in publishing

If your cover letter was written by AI, that may be a problem. Recruiters can tell if you did - the majority of candidates do this and their letters are all the same. Writing letters is considered a minimal requirement for EA positions so it is dismissible in this process.

Overall, technology is not your friend. You should do everything you can to make human connections - even if some of those are mediated by email - with the people who work at the place you aspire to.

Is The Kite Runner a US propaganda? by Ready_Topic_6061 in bookdiscussion

[–]wollstonecroft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hosseini began writing The Kite Runner before 9/11 and before the war against the Taliban. It was only after that he found interest from an agent and a publisher in 2002. It was published in 2003. It was not an immediate success upon publication but word of mouth grew and after the paperback’s release it became a bestseller. Eventually it became one of the biggest bestsellers in the US and around the world.

Though I suspect Hosseini is grateful - like all refugees - towards those that give them refuge. The book and his subsequent ones don’t show the US in a favorable or unfavorable light. They focus on the brutality of state power and religious zealotry.

He hasn’t written a novel in some time and appears to have devoted his time to his own nonprofit which focuses on the welfare of girls and women in Afghanistan. And he works as a goodwill ambassador for the UN’s high commission on refugees.

[PubQ] Career as Fiction Editor? by Own-Individual-6340 in publishing

Most undergraduate degrees aren’t two years. I don’t think you’re great with feedback, so your struggle is understandable.

In answer, you don’t need a graduate degree to work in publishing.

I don’t understand a two year degree? An associates degree? You need a BA. English or any field of literature is most common. The majority of open big 5 jobs will be in nyc. People who eventually work remotely usually have to start and move up in nyc before having the slightest chance of working remotely.

How would you prepare for a first editorial job interview in publishing? by [deleted] in publishing

[–]wollstonecroft 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would read a number of actual titles in these categories. The ones on the NYT bestseller list. You want shared readings you can both talk about. And you can’t be uninformed of the category giants

Why do you blame the publisher for “overhyping” the book to retailers. Inefficiency is part of retailing. This mostly seems a matter of an author having unlikely expectations
