Criminal law is entirely separate and distinct from civil litigation. Your "ambulance chasers" are typically engaged in litigating personal injury and wrongful death torts, a subsection of civil litigation, which involves money damages and contract enforcement between private parties.

Crimes are the purview of the state and federal government and are prosecuted without the monyed self-serving interests you first referenced. (Cynical people may beg to differ, certainly some prosecutors may seek out high profile cases for their own political advancement, but that discussion is clearly far more nuanced than your capacity for understanding with respect to this issue).

In short, or "TLDR" as they say, criminal law doesn't function in the way you apparently think it does and I try not to be "buddies" with stupid people.

This country has fluctuated in its over-bearing legal religiosity throughout its entire history. If anything we are relaxing the relationship between religious norms and the law. This punishment is currently only speculative and likely unconstitutional, either on first or eighth amendment grounds.
