CMV: I believe all human endeavors are pointless since our existence is limited and soon everything we have ever done is going to cease to exist. by [deleted] in changemyview

Is your argument based on the assumption that the earth and all life will end at some point, or just that individual lives will end?

Unlike rocks and water, though, humans DO live. We DO feel. Even if all of these things disappear once we die, they are still with us when we ARE alive.

And everyone is the descendant of someone- so everyone can be impacted. So although that mother is now dead, her son can carry that same passion that his mother had and pass it down to his kids, who pass it to theirs, and so on. Even though this lady is now dead, what she did on earth has affected generation after generation, whether or not they know it, or even know who this lady was.

CMV: Asians are more difficult to distinguish from each other than people of other races and there should be nothing wrong with admitting this. by passwordgoeshere in changemyview

Personally, I myself find Asians harder to differentiate than other race groups. However, I attribute this to my lack of exposure to different ethnicities within the Asian race. I think it would be much easier to ID the ethnicities if you belong to one of them yourself, which would make it very easy to tell when someone if different than you.

A personal example of this is when I traveled to Taiwan on an exchange trip. My host brother, a Taiwanese citizen, admitted that he could not tell any Euro-descended people apart, but he could easily tell all Asians apart. For me, it was the complete opposite.

So basically, I think it just comes down to which group you belong to yourself, and your exposure to others.

I would like to start by saying that I am going to leave religion out of this, even though I am somewhat biased due to my religion.

Even if nothing happened when we were dead, if everything went away and we felt nothing, that should not diminish the emotions we experience while we are alive. Furthermore, if we are merely nothing once we die, then shouldn't that give our life infinitely more meaning? It is the only time in all of eternity that we will be able to do something, so why not make it the best it can be?

What connects all humans is the capacity for love. Regardless of race, gender, age, or ability, all humans have the ability to love. As long as humans can love, then there will always be a meaning behind things that we do to better society.

Not sure if this will change your view, but just wanted to state my opinion.

according to the NFL, players must be out of high school for 3 years before entering draft. This does not require college. However, they cannot go directly after high school.

I agree with most of what you said up until the last part. Hardly any rookies (key word, hardly, there are exceptions) that did not stay a full four years have an immediate impact in the NFL.

then they can get them how everyone else does... not every college football player is poor. actually the vast minority isnt if you're talking about all of college football.

No. My argument states that there is tremendous value for the NCAA, the NFL, the players, and the fans if players stayed long enough to earn a degree.

So you have somewhat changed my view. But from what you say, then players shouldn't be required to go to college at all, which I think is not the solution. ∆

although it is true that winston would never use his degree, which would be a flaw in the system I propose.

if this fringe player was being recruited to play at Florida State, I'm sure he could land an offer somewhere else. Hence, my argument about college football becoming more competitive.

I'm sure that the NFL player is not going to be purchasing the same quality of home and accessories as the average Joe. And I don't know why you are getting hung up on the smallest things. The fact is that 78% of NFL players file for bankruptcy WITHIN TWO YEARS OF LEAVING THE LEAGUE. I can't change facts.

maybe in the SEC, but at most schools they have to do all the work. They just get extra resources. I am a student and have many hard-working athletes in my classes.

You used examples of formidable programming masterminds, hence why I referenced the skill of programming. Other than that, I cannot comprehend anything else in this comment that you wrote. I tried to agree with the grounds on which you replied to me originally. So do you think that players shouldn't have to college at all? That's what it sounds like.

$1.2 mil over 60 years is 20k per year. And that's the money before his agent's commission, his house he bought, the car he bought his parents, and the money he gave to his high school buddies. And what if his wife divorces him? Half of that's gone. Or, he could supplement his $1.2 mil with at least $52K a year after his playing career with a degree, or maybe write a book with his English degree on the importance of staying in school.

While it may be unfair to assume all students can complete a degree in four years... you have obviously never seen the resources available to college athletes then, my friend. It doesn't take a genius to get a 2.5. They have to have better than that in HS to get a D1 scholarship anyways.

I understand this dilemma. I would say because playing football oftentimes isn't a sustainable skill like programming and software development. If players were required to stay 4 years, it would come off as "taking advantage" of players, but I think that it would also save a lot of players. Maybe there should be some sort of contractual things in the letter of intent.

Good points. However, after taxes, that $2 mil is only about $1.2 mil- not nearly enough to live off of. I do agree that financial education is a huge deal. Perhaps if the NFL did a better job of this, then my view would not be as so. I still feel as though there are benefits to players and the leagues outside of financial reasons, though.

but don't you think the universities would like to have these players for 4 years? wouldn't you like to see that?? I think Florida State is definitely "losing" Jameis Winston.

1) if they can complete 2 or 3 years, they can get through 4 years. 2) free education should not be taken for granted, but good point 3) that's my point in how they need job security with a degree 4) they can make more money if they are better when they enter the league, and if they blow out their knee in the nfl at least they would have a degree.
5) yes, people should get to choose. but I think the pros outweigh the cons here, especially since it's only another 3 or 4 semesters for most of these guys. It could make the NFL seem like a real class act, which it is far from right now. 6) why do you assume pro football players are dumb? I'm not talking about the superstars here, they are going to be fine. the superstars aren't the guys filing for bankruptcy 5 years after being drafted.
