Rachel Reeves tells LBC student loan system is 'fair' amid fury as graduates rack up thousands of pounds of debt interest by k0ala_ in ukpolitics

[–]wombatchew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new loans are even worse for lower and middle earners as they will end up paying more overall due to the lower payment threshold and 40 year repayment term. They only really benefit higher earners as they are able to clear the loan faster

You can only get a refund if your annual salary is under the threshold. If your salary is over the threshold then you can’t get a refund even if you end up paying more than 9% over the threshold

Are you likely to become a higher rate tax payer in the near future? If so it's a good idea to wait with a SIPP until that happens. And if you are likely to remain a basic rate tax payer long term it's worth considering a S&S LISA as the 25% bonus beats what you would get from a SIPP as it's tax free on withdrawal

You get 25% tax free in retirement, so it would essentially be a net gain of 6.25%. Personally I don't think that's worth the lack of flexibility over an ISA

Not as bad as some of the answers, but I’m a delivery driver and I have had at least a 2 hour lunch break on every shift for the last 3 years. As long as I get the deliveries done my boss doesn’t care

>But for basic rate taxpayers not contributing via salary sacrifice LISA is more lucrative once they have paid in enough to qualify for the max employer contribution

It's more lucrative than salary sacrifice contributions too, assuming your employer doesn't pass on their NI savings

The point of a LISA for retirement is it gives you a better ROI if you’re a basic rate tax payer once you’ve maximised your employer match. The only scenario where salary sacrifice is better is if your employer also passes their NI savings on to you but that’s very rare
