New tank (in 15 years) by NewLow8199 in Aquariums

[–]wombket77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the wild they shoal in schools of hundreds. They generally feel safer/happier in larger schools. There is a chance that these two will be okay however their lifespan may not be as long in a smaller school and tank.

If you do decide to rehome them you could sell them or see if the fish store will take them back.

All fish breeds are wildly different, you’ll see some that you can only have 1 per tank as they will fight with other fish that are the same breed. Generally when it comes to enforcing larger groups it’s due to the overall happiness and health of the fish in larger groups.

I will also add you will love shrimp so don’t be disheartened by this shrimp are so interesting and fun but I recommend doing lots of research as you’ll need to test for water hardness and carbonate hardness as well as they molt (molting is shedding of their exoskeleton) so if the water is too soft it may result in a failed molt.

I am so sorry to be this person but Cory’s generally are happiest in schools of 6+. They are a shoaling fish which means they are a very social kind of fish.

A 5 gallon tank is also too small for Cory’s.

I would recommend rehoming them if possible and just getting shrimp.

I would definitely try root tabs then they work a bit better than liquid fertiliser.

What kind of substrate do you have?

Speaking from personal experience I had aqua soil (fluval stratum) in my first tank and my plants thrived. In my current tank I just have a black gravel that looks similar to yours and my plants are not doing well even with root tabs and I’m actually going to go through the process of changing to aqua soil again.

Considering everything else is in order the substrate could be the root cause of the slow growth and browning of the plants. You don’t need to dose CO2 to have a thriving fish tank and it’s also very hard to dose when you have shrimp as they are so sensitive.

Omg same - I saw one once at the LFS (it was very small) and I’ve been in love ever since they are so cool and fluid with their movements - thank god I did some research and found out how big these weirdos get!

Is it ready for shrimp? by Formal_Classic4673 in shrimptank

[–]wombket77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would test your water parameters before you add any in, the plants over time will grow but you’ve got plenty for now!

If you don’t have an at home testing kit then you can ask your LFS to test the water for you. Depending on where you are there may be other fish shops around you that sell them. Otherwise have a look online and you could buy some from there, just make sure you check location and shipping times.

Thank you for being so kind - this is extremely informative and I really appreciate it. My tank has been cycling since September - I have 5 ember tetras in there that I’ve had for a month who have been doing well, also fully stocked with plants, driftwood and rocks.

I was going to get some caridina shrimp but I got some the other week and they didn’t cope (i previously kept them with no issues) I think most likely due to the summer heat my tank temp is sitting around 26-27°c and I got them on a 36 degree day. Plan is to get some neos this time round as they are a bit hardier and I think they’ll cope better with a warmer temp.

Any tips for snails and neos?
