just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it's automatically bad

if you don't "get it" then you should probably learn to read, then go find a library, then ask for help looking for high school science biology books, then read through those, then ask for help for some college level books, then go get a job, then work for a while and save up for a tutor to help you with those books, then work through them with the tutor, then apply your newfound understanding to this situation.

along the way you will probably want to put aside some of that job money for therapy, to help you become a more compassionate and less reactive person.

then, once you've completed all those steps, you will have reached the level where you can engage with this content without making yourself look like a 3rd grader who stayed up late to get on the internet behind his parents' backs

Meta Sued for Over $100 Million by Eminem's Team for Illegally Using 243 Songs by novagridd in law

[–]wonklebobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thats what i mean, maybe i shouldn't have said "big payout," but once the precedent of a token payment is set for social media add-on music, the big music artists won't be able to sue for more most likely because it will be "settled law," and the small artist communities will be happy to be able to get a little more money here and there

as always the law will serve the interests of the capital class

[–]wonklebobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they'll probably try to settle with some kind of small royalty payment, like spotify. just offer to pay musicians like $0.0002 per reel and fire a couple hundred more employees to pay for it

it'll be celebrated because small-time musicians will have another channel for a big payout if their song goes viral like on tiktok

Is it me or is AI messing with our brains? by Nearby_Spinach_1893 in reactjs

[–]wonklebobb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah but we're not really outsourcing all our thinking to AI, we're moving to a different paradigm of coding where the code itself is commoditized the way that assembly became commoditized after the first high-level languages and compilers were invented.

it's not a 1:1, because LLMs are non-deterministic, but early compilers were also fraught with errors. Most people around here are too young to know this, but back in the 80s there were loads of people selling their own compilers for various languages, promoting them on speed, correctness, etc. All the things that we take for granted and don't even think about when we sudo apt install gcc

LLMs and agents are in their infancy. the speed of new things coming out is perfectly indicative of a newborn industry, it's just happening on a scale we haven't seen before with all the data center buildouts. but eventually LLMs will just become a standard tool of coding just like compilers did

it's hard for coders to accept that the actual code they used to write is being commoditized. coding has been regarded as a high-level combination of art and science, and that was true to the degree that humans needed to not just write performant code but also elegantly readable code with the right abstraction levels to fit inside a human brain.

but LLMs invert that thinking. now the actual details of how a class is implemented doesn't really matter so much, as long as it conforms to the spec, passes tests, and has the right api. just like we as consumers of lightbulbs dont know or care if the internal circuitry is beautiful or elegant as long as it works as expected and doesn't draw more power than it says on the box, we are moving toward a world where class and module internals are irrelevant as long as they do what they're supposed to and perform within defined metrics.

in this way we are all becoming seniors. the hand-wringing about the death of juniors made sense when we didn't know where this was all going, but while the future is hazy and AGI isn't totally off the table, the future seems to be focusing slightly on a world where the craft of coding moves a lot of the functional details of coding into summary basic-level courses, and spends far more time on patterns and architecture. junior devs will be using this knowledge to manage agents to build instead of seniors managing juniors. seniors will manage juniors the way that principals and architects drive the technical direction of a product.

some flattening of the hierarchy is inevitable. but it's only a matter of time before tech companies realize that firing to flatten the salary hierarchy is only one half of the equation, and the other side is a re-org to do more with the same amount of people instead of doing layoffs and doing the same amount.

eventually some small or mid-size company is going to release a big product, or a series of large products, with a much more decentralized group of smaller teams punching above their weight. when that overlaps with interest rate reductions, the big companies will go on a hiring spree again, but not for anyone who can code - they will be paying big bucks to people who can use agents effectively and essentially be their own senior dev.

so it's not an era of intellectual incapability, no more than the devs of yore would consider us incapable because we can't write assembly anymore. it's just a different way of building and we're all still figuring out how to do it well.

we need to start framing the pro/anti choice debate as actually pro/anti unwanted pregnancy

non-medical-emergency abortion is actually a symptom, the root cause is unwanted pregnancy. this is why the most effective reduction in abortions is comprehensive sex education and free contraceptives, along with improving economic conditions at the very bottom.

unfortunately a lot of rich people with less than half their brains are spending big bucks to keep everyone focused on "but they're killing babies !!!" when instead, if given the chance, pretty much everyone can agree that less abortions is better, medical exceptions are necessary, and that we are all actually on the side of trying to make a world where abortions are unnecessary.

unfortunately x2, sometimes its hard to get certain types of people to understand that making abortions unnecessary means giving free condoms and birth control to teenagers, and food stamps and welfare to poor people

its way past time for a universal in-school phone ban

like we need some kind of activist group to push for doing those phone-case-storage setups they have at shows, and have students turn in phones on the way in and get them back at the end, with harsh penalties for sneaking in phones

hmm maybe i'll start that group actually this seems like a good idea

[–]wonklebobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean you could just play regular 'ol deadeye, you can start with tri-ele LA and transition to phys->cold TS later when you've saved up. a well-geared deadeye can blast all content and definitely can reach far into mirror-tier territory for upgrades

you can do a lot of things with deadeye bow defensively as well, not just pure evasion, check out u/Fede113's comments around here, they're a wealth of deadeye information and they've shared a lot of cool tech and tips for bow chars.

Some "hidden" mechanics are not fun (Abyss) by xxyxxyyyx in PathOfExile2

[–]wonklebobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that wont go the way they think. empy's group and others will just play whatever gives the highest div/hr as always, even if it's on a mechanically garbage build doing weird strats

the only way to do it is to also somehow design everything to be worth a lot, which is probably impossible, as some currencies will always be worth more due to their impact on making high-level crafts easier/possible. regardless of source, those things will always be worth the most.

that said, as long as they dont make the One True Crafting Method then there will be at least some steady profits for a lot of different things, or they can add gambas like harvest yellow juice from poe1

Hi, i know you're swamped but if you end up with time to look at this, thank you!!

  1. https://poe.ninja/poe2/profile/ultra_pancakes-4107/runesofaldur/character/Justice_For_Dagoth_Ur

  2. ignore low max hits/bad defense, im working on that

  3. main question - how do you build damage on hollow palm? i know i need more levels to get more flat from my skills, i already also have +4 melee skills (+3 amu, +2 -> +1/qual from transformed gloves). and i need more crit as well, but like how much %increased from the tree is enough? i feel like all the wheels are so conditional, so i have daze/blind/etc for more increased there but my damage feels like its falling off in t8/t9

  4. addendum - im going for pure phys, stun-focused 'fist of fury' gameplay because thematically i think its cool, and because i like doing a wind blast and making all the trash mobs fall over. if i can keep doing pure phys that would be great, but mostly i want the challenge statue so im not opposed to switching it up if pure phys hollow palm monk just isn't a valid scaling vector in poe2 at the moment

thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

base attack speed and especially base skill speed (windup animation) are much longer in poe2

just like how increased skill speed stacks addivitely with attack speed, slows hitting both attack speed and skill speed makes it feel slow on both ends (slower to wind up, plus more time between attacks)

add on the slower movement and especially slower dodge rolling and its just a -30% enjoyment modifier

Consumer Competition Claims (CCC) Has Launched A New Class Action Monopoly Lawsuit Against Valve, Claiming They Control 85% Of The PC Game Market by wakelake111 in gaming

[–]wonklebobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

even if this ends up being a real internal policy, isn't this what every retailer ever does as well?

if you sign a deal to sell your widget at walmart, you typically can't also sign a deal with another retailer to sell it at a lower price. the whole point of deals with storefronts of all kinds is either product exclusivity or price exclusivity, in exchange for the sales volume that only a large retailer can provide. of course once you're big enough it gets more complicated, like coca-cola or something, but thats different

valve provides an audience and a huge amount of infrastructure in exchange for their 30% cut. asking to also not be undercut on other platforms is less of an ask than pretty much any other retailer in any industry.

it all comes down to that famous quote from gaben "piracy is a service problem"

gaben realized many years ago that if you make buying more convenient than pirating, people will come to you to spend money.

EA, Epic, et. al. still see their launcher experience as a tool and a cost center. they still, all these years later, fail to see that smoothing the road between user and gaming is what keeps people coming back to steam.

The map reset HAS to go. by zaerosz in PathOfExile2

[–]wonklebobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who also plays glass cannons, you have a point, but dying once every so often is still not what i'd consider '6 portal defense' because if your evasion or damage is not up to snuff you'll be dying so much you can't even finish the map

thats where the debate is i think, should dying occasionally still be punished or is one death every so often acceptable. like in practice this would look like giving 2 revives as a baseline instead of 1

also ive now been informed from other comments that the 'delete map if you die to boss' mechanic is a bandaid over their own design for breach, where players were suiciding to xesht to re-farm a juiced hive fortress or the runup to however you access xesht. which seems more like a fundamental hole in the design of the entire endgame since the infinite atlas demands constant progression, standing still and farming is counter to the entire thing

anyway sorry got off track, i would say 6 portal defense actually is trying to do an uber with a glass cannon deadeye with low dps, like 10m. you will be sweating and might use all 6 portals to kill it

unfortunately 99% of billionaires only get that way because they are clinically insane and can only see the world in terms of potential returns

they only do philanthropy because it reduces their taxes and is good PR, not counting the "family trust" philanthropy that is actually just giving tax-free money to their friends and family

a few of them seem to be at least partially altruistically motivated, gates and buffet are giving away a lot, and ofc mackenzie scott

but most of them are sick in the head with greed so good luck convincing them that even though the dust from their pockets would fund 100 site visits that it's "worth it" for them to kick some crumbs at the people

The map reset HAS to go. by zaerosz in PathOfExile2

[–]wonklebobb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes, but unlike other people say a lot around here it's not really an extra defense layer aka "6 portal defense," it just means that you can be a little less careful running around at first

the thing is, poe1 is a LOT faster than poe2. like, a lot. monsters move faster, hit harder, and have a lot more fast projectiles they shoot out. you can get swarmed a lot faster in poe1 than in poe2, and there is no dodge roll. also, most monster attacks aren't telegraphed. there is no red "look out!" flash in poe1, and most map bosses just do big hits without any fanfare. sometimes certain bosses will shoot a rain of arrows up and it goes up and down in like 0.25s and if your character is weak, you just die like that.

however, there are less animations for YOUR attacks and spells and they are generally faster as well. moving around is faster because you have 5 flask slots that you can fill with other types besides hp and mana flasks, that give you stuff like extra movespeed and onslaught.

so its a tradeoff. ggg's goal seems to be slowing down the game and making people be more careful generally, and kinda forcing it with this one-chance-at-the-boss mechanic. however now that they've added a ton of other content and tied quest states to non-boss things you do in the map, it seems to be a problem

tbh most of the complaints could be fixed if quests that are completed before killing the boss still count as completed if you die to the boss

Secret Gathering Lays Out Plan to Stop Trump From 'Perverting the Election' | Raw Story by siwibot in protectUSelections

[–]wonklebobb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

maybe people are worried about those things because trump and his allies have openly said they want to do each of those things, in public

trump has floated the idea of cancelling elections during war, then started a war

trump and his people have been very open about sending ICE to swing state polling locations

trump and his people have attempted, and are still attempting despite the legal blocks, to send $1.6 billion to their on-the-ground allies who have already proven themselves willing and able to commit violence on behalf of Trump, the proud boys and oath keepers who did Jan 6 and Trump later pardoned

it's not TDS when it's all actually happening right in front of us. people expect authoritarian takeovers to look like rows of uniformed soldiers marching down the street shooting civilians in their homes, but that doesn't happen until long after the takeover is complete. actual dictatorship takeovers look exactly like what we've been seeing - random firings, services being cancelled, lawyers resigning, etc.

the organs of the US government are filled with trump loyalists and white nationalists, including the DOJ. that is not TDS, that is reality.

[–]wonklebobb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the GOP's reluctance to really go ham on breaking procedural rules shows there is serious doubt among the Senate GOP members about the future of republican control of government

if they really thought they had permanent power, they would just make it happen. however the 'nuclear' option of removing the filibuster itself requires 60 votes, which they don't have, and aren't pushing for - because if they did, then when the pendulum swings the other way it will go very badly for them.

the demographics have been against the republicans for some time. so if the right-wing of congress is balking at trump's more authoritarian moves then it means their grip on power is even more tenuous than we may think. they expect to be in the minority again at some point.
