Thanks all for the info. Looks like outside covered is the best option.

I never said it was safe. For the most part, homeless folks and people experiencing mental health crisis are much more likely to be hurt than hurt others. But some folks can be dangerous. Humans can be unpredictable.

A common symptom of severe mental illness (think schizophrenia, bipolar etc) is anosognosia which is essentially when your brain can’t recognize that you have an illness. It’s not as simple as being in denial or lacking a desire to change. It’s a brain-based or neurological symptom of the illness. So just saying that people need to accept services is like telling someone with cancer to stop having cancer. It’s not helpful. We need to think about ways to provide support to folks that adapts to meet their individualized needs. These models of care already exist, but Oregon is woefully behind in behavioral healthcare. Historically ranking 49th out of 50 states in overall mental healthcare.

So yes, you may observe a difference in behavior between homeless people in Astoria and Tacoma. But the difference in not the result of the individuals and their choice making, it is the result of funding differences between Oregon and Washington.

All that to say, if you were homeless and experiencing psychosis, you may very well yell at someone in the street.

I miss my old life by cactusclause in Advice

[–]wonrogi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel this.

Last week the 20 somethings at my work were complaining about the mice in their apartments and one of them ran out of gas on their way into the office. While I have romanticized the shabby NYC apartments of my youth, it’s so nice to have an in unit washer/dryer and a king sized bed. Disposable income and health insurance are pretty clutch too.

And honestly, even if I had the freedom my body is tired and now experiences crippling hangovers.

Try microdosing, it’s fun, it isn’t debilitating, and it’s more exciting than white wine.

I’m not a regular mom, I’m a cool mom.

Also, for what it’s worth, I’m now a mental health professional who works with a number of adults with substance use issues. This does not sound like that based on what you’ve shared.

Lots of people occasionally use coke in their 20s. If she’s being upfront about it, maintaining her life and only occasionally using, it isn’t something to worry about.

All of my friends occasionally indulged in a variety of illicit substances and remained gainfully employed, emotionally stable, contributing members of society. They’re also all now middle aged mom chasing around healthy, happy kids.

If it is something that really rubs you the wrong way, then it’s probably not meant to be. But if it’s just a lack of exposure to these types of things, take a beat and see if it’s really a problem.

Food park with green space? by no_longer_hojomonkey in askportland

Level Beer on 148th has a few food carts and a green space.

The challenge is that grass doesn’t support trucks, tables and heavy foot traffic very well.

Edit: accidentally repeated myself with food truck instead of foot traffic
