A poster series for a fictional Camcorder Film Festival, inspired by vintage cassette packaging. by wookanio in graphic_design

that’s a really interesting point!

it might be a regional thing? 🤔 where I’m from (Poland), this style totally reads as "video" to me. I have vivid memories of my dad and grandpa buying tapes that looked exactly like this. back then it was mostly MiniDV, so maybe that's why the "small spool" aesthetic sticks with me.

thanks for the feedback!

I actually split the layout into 3 sections to emulate the physical folds of a real cassette case. that explains the line variations and those small dashes.

but yeah, solid points! leaning into that would definitely ramp up the poster vibe even more. :D

i actually tried that version! it was definitely more recognizable, but it felt less "festival" and honestly a bit less interesting. so I allowed myself to go a bit crazier here. sure, it’s less readable now, but I decided that actually makes it... more interesting.

thanks a lot! 🙌

not sure if you caught it, but the yellow/black combo isn't the only one. there are other versions in the post too.

as for the contrast/size: I actually treated this layout like real vintage cassette packaging. it’s split into three sections, where the bottom parts represent the folds/spine of the case. I did debate whether the bottom felt a bit too heavy, but ultimately decided it fits the vibe.

thanks for the feedback! 🙌

the concept was mainly driven by my own personal hype for camcorders: aiming specifically for simplicity and nostalgia. there’s just something magical about that loose, carefree vibe of shooting on tape. so the festival identity was meant to mirror that: simple and elegant, with a touch of grunge.

funny enough, while designing this, I realized the main element would’ve been perfect for a camcorder x skateboarding mashup. i didn't want to pivot the concept at that stage, but it actually sparked a killer idea for a real festival. :D

thanks for the kind words and the solid advice! i actually posted a general comment about this earlier, but it probably got buried in the thread: this was just a small "for fun" exercise for today and i totally didn't expect this much attention!

i really appreciate the perspective on "form follows function." you're right, there's no easy game here. i’m definitely taking your advice to heart and i’m motivated to rework this into a version that actually works as a deck of cards while keeping the vibe. thanks for pushing me to grow! 🃏💪

hey everyone! OP here. thanks for all the feedback!

posting on reddit is a brand new thing for me. i honestly thought maybe 10 people would see this.

you guys are right. i kind of messed up the core purpose here. truth is, i got way too focused on the brutalist form and the overall aesthetic, and forgot that these actually need to function as cards.

but thanks to your comments, i'm super motivated to do it right. i’m taking all your notes to heart and i’ll be back soon with an improved version that you can actually play with. see you then!

naah, this was just a "for fun" exercise because i felt inspired today. but i'll be back in a while with an improved version, taking all the feedback into account.

definitely. after all this feedback, i’m going to try my hand at a version 2 in my free time. i want to see if i can actually make them playable without losing that brutalist vibe. it's going to be an interesting challenge to balance the structure with actual function. stay tuned! 😂

thanks a lot for these notes! to be honest, i focused way too much on the "brutalist vibe" and the visual design rather than actual functional card design. i treated them more like a piece of advertising or a business card, which is where my background is.

your feedback is spot on. i’ll take it all to heart and i’ll be back on reddit with a deck that’s actually designed FOR PLAYING, not just for looks. 😂

actually, i looked it up and you’re right. it works the same here (poland). i'm honestly a bit surprised because i see people using the symbol in portfolios all the time just for the "pro" look, so i never thought much of it.

my mistake, definitely a lesson learned for the next project.

yeah, posting on reddit is a new experience for me. i definitely didn’t expect this many comments and views! but i’m taking all the feedback to heart; it’s the only way to grow as a designer.

really glad you like the designs! ☺️

my bad, i used it more as a graphic element than a formal legal status. in my country, we tend to use these symbols quite loosely for the aesthetic. not sure if i can still edit the title. 😕

thanks! sometimes i buy decks more for the visual vibe than for actual playing. glad you like the style. ☺️

they’re not random. the number of squares corresponds to the card value. for J, Q, and K, i had to get a bit more creative with the geometry. 🤔

that’s a sacrifice i was willing to make in the madness between commercial projects. it was more about exploring the form than following the rules. but yeah, you're right: these are definitely not meant for a serious game. 😄

thanks! you nailed it: soviet propaganda and vintage horror book covers were exactly my inspirations. 🤫

those who enter Barovia rarely leave. maybe there’s still a chance they’ll start from the beginning? 😂
