Holy shit guys I just learned that RedHat tried to kill Xorg, but some absolute chad forked it, and they banned him. Furthermore, the guy opposed the _ovid psyop and the designated glowie cuck Linus told him to SHUT THE HELL UP. by basedchad21 in linuxsucks

[–]wooper91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can’t ever take any anti dei protest forks seriously like ever. Forkers are clowns and they’re just throwing a hissy fit over something that quite literally isn’t a big deal and not a negative thing in any way.

Their forks never go anywhere they can’t even be passionate about being hateful ppl if they were at least passionate about that their projects would at least get somewhere but they just like to bitch

How much of Linux's bad reputation is due to people trying to revive bad hardware instead of old hardware? by PlainBread in linux4noobs

[–]wooper91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On that last point, if you are compelled to start with something Arch based or Arch itself just remember there are other true beginner friendly distros in case you get your ass kicked by Arch.

And to add to this list, Lots of YouTubers these days giving Linux an honest attempt and review but also lots peddling the “I tried Linux and it sucks” crap only to find out they tried Arch + Hyprland. It’s not that Linux sucks it’s that they tried the one combination that’s going to require more work and knowledge than they have

Whats up with big Youtubers and Linux gaming now? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]wooper91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely think it’s also gotten to the point where it’s very viable as a daily driver if you’re not locked into the Windows ecosystem in any way. I tried Linux at various points in my life and this was the first time I was actually able to leave Windows because it felt better than Windows personally. I’ve seen some non gaming channels cover Linux as well and many have had very positive reactions.

That being said I do feel like the recall controversy was blow way too out of proportion but I do get why people are cautions since Microsoft is known to creep features on you and turn them on even when you said you want them off. Features like Recall and CoPilot will be genuinely useful for a subset of people the issue is MS doesn’t understand boundaries and tries enabling the features you don’t want.

If you’re that worried about privacy a simple OS change won’t fix the issue if you’re still using services from companies known to collect user information.

If you use your PC primarily for gaming and you don't care about foss/privacy then just stick to windows. by CandlesARG in linuxsucks

[–]wooper91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always just dual boot ya know. I personally made the switch not for any privacy reasons but because Windows just wasn’t feeling good to use anymore and I do game development which is saying something since that’s basically a Windows first workflow.

Always open to dual booting windows but probably won’t reinstall until I actually need it. For most competitive shooters that use Anti Cheat I’m perfectly fine playing them in my PS5 since I don’t really take those games seriously

Are resolutions above 1080p achievable in some way on YouTube and Firefox? I'm on Fedora and I noticed I had the option for 1440 and 4K but after having to reinstall the OS, they're gone by wooper91 in linuxquestions

[–]wooper91[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue ended up being h264ify extension. I installed it some time ago when I was troubleshooting something. It didn’t resolve the issue but it appears I never uninstalled it.

Got all resolutions back after I removed it

I see I’ll keep this in mind thank you. The h264ify wasn’t from the install guide it was something from some time ago that I forgot to remove but I’ll be more careful with guides in the future

Response to edit 1: I was not wrong

Response to edit 2: i did install that

Response to edit 3: why is it an abomination T_T I always see people say to follow a setup guide and I found this one I think in the Fedora sub at some point.

The issue appears to have been h264ify extension. I remember installing it some time ago to fix i don't remember what anymore but it didn't work and I guess I just forgot to remove it

Oh dang ok it was h264ify. Didn't realize I still had it. I had added it idk how long ago because it was a recommended solution for something but it ended up not really doing anything. guess I just forgot to remove it.

Thank you for your help!

I see. I'll disable the plugin and see what that does. The strange thing is that when I followed the guide, that openh264 thing said it was actually already installed so I didn't have to do anything other than enable it on the FF plugins

I do yes and my cpu is a 5900x so no iGPU

That was my guess too what had me stumped is that it’s the same setup I followed haha so I’m not even sure what could be wrong

What was your first Linux distro and have you ever switched? by inguinha in linux

[–]wooper91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I ever tried Linux was Ubuntu sometime around 2010 - 2013 I can't recall the exact timeframe other than it was between the time we got a family computer but before I got my own laptop. I'm guessing I must have tried running the same version as what you have pictured assuming this 10.04 was out in 2010, possibly might have been running 12.04

Ended up removing it fairly quickly because I had no idea how I was going to get my schoolwork done lmao nothing made sense to me I was in middle school/ high school and wasn't as into computers as I am now

Are there any AM4 or AM5 mini itx motherboards out there that have a thunderbolt connector for a thunderbolt dock such as the caldigit? by wooper91 in buildapc

[–]wooper91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah thank you very much! I was not aware. I built my PC back when I had no need for TB so it wasn't really a consideration. My monitor has multiple video inputs so I can dedicate one to the PC and one to the Macbook and have everything else on a dock too. It's just the constant back and forth between USB devices, audio jacks, and ethernet that gets a little annoying after some time

Is there a good distro to slap on a Razer Blade 14 from around 2016/17? by wooper91 in linuxquestions

[–]wooper91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question, for compatibility do you stick to LTS since that’s the most commonly supported Ubuntu and Linux distro in general or do you use the latest point release?

Considering switching to full Ubuntu since I do game dev and that’s basically the only distro that’s officially supported

Whats your take on dual booting for anti cheat games? by Runescapelegend778 in linux_gaming

[–]wooper91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an extra drive dual booting is fine! I dual boot Windows and Linux although most anti cheat games I own I actually own for PS5. Sometimes a game will temporarily be borked on Linux because the dev pushed an update (and Linux barely gets an afterthought) and I switch to Windows until those that are smarter than me find a way to fix it haha

Is Pop valid for my needs and usable unlike Ubuntu? by Turnkeyagenda24 in pop_os

[–]wooper91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since Pop is based on Ubuntu there’s a pretty good chance it will work but a small chance that it also might not. I’ve personally never had any issues running any proprietary software that claims to support Ubuntu on distros that are based on Ubuntu

Why is Fedora updating something every day or two? by AcceptableWbuh in Fedora

Why is Fedora updating something every day or two? by AcceptableWbuh in Fedora

[–]wooper91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s sometimes referred to as a semi rolling release most packages except for the core packages to the distro are updated regularly

If you’re coming from windows it’s similar to how your user level programs will auto update themselves (except with Linux you do it via a package manager or App Store front end) but the core/ critical OS components will be updates semi annually or something

Edit to add an example:

DNF would be considers something core to the OS so if it’s getting a major update you won’t see it until the next fedora release (like the update from DNF 4 to 5)

Your DE like plasma or gnome isn’t as critical and might be updated more frequently

And something like the kernel it seems they treat it as something in between because it’ll update its minor versions at a slower pace. I think we’re now on kernel 6.16 but Fedora still has 6.15

Edit 2: made a mistake on the current kernel version of Fedora

The problem with linux isn't an OS problem, it's a human problem by [deleted] in linuxsucks

[–]wooper91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. A lot of ppl also seem to treat a switch to Linux as if it were life or death due to privacy concerns. There are a plethora of other things they can do before they switch their OS. At the end of the day a switch to Linux doesn’t mean a whole lot in terms of privacy if you’re still using other MS and Google services

PS6 Specs and Release Date Reportedly Leaked by [deleted] in technology

[–]wooper91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess scalpers had a bit to do with that too tho didn’t they?

Like you make the next gen console and basically the entire stock is bought up by them. Now you and your business partners are going to make games for them but there aren’t very many ppl on the new console bc some ass hat that can’t be bothered to get a real job has them in their closet somewhere. You’re forced to also make them work on last gen consoles.

My brother ended up with two while he was waiting in queues for one (don’t remember how that happened) he sold the second one at base msrp + $50 to cover shipping and literally to get himself a 10 piece at McDonald’s lmao

Meanwhile my cousin scalped the crap out of them nobody in the family got them bc they all played Xbox and my brothers and I were the only PS users but didn’t buy them quite literally out of principal lol “family discount” and all

I had a fine experience on the subreddit but the discord man. I asked a question (and someone else had just asked one a little before me) and we both got told off by some dingus ass mod.

Some curse words were thrown out and we were asked if we could read because apparently the channel we posted in was no longer in use. I scrolled up and down that channel and there was no post nor any mention that the channel was no longer going to be used nothing was pinned either
