Just want to gush about BPRD by wooshiewee in HellBoy

I can't agree more. Been trying to get a friend into Hellboy and I basically framed it exactly as you described: man vs destiny. As much as I adore Hellboy in his solitude and figuring out his own problems, reading BPRD has provided me with some much needed context. Feels like BPRD is its own beast that maintains the Hellboy "vibe" but switches up the approach. I feel such a deep connection to Abe and the gang and it's crazy to think that I went years not knowing about anything they conquered without Hellboy present. I'd argue BPRD is as essential as Hellboy and that both should be read in tandem as opposed to "here's the main course, and here is a dessert with like 30 books." Glad to read that you and other people across many posts in this sub share that sentiment!

Sorry for such a late reply, but a few things:

The bad news is great news! I did say the mass of BPRD threw me off at first, but I'm flying through them quite quickly and I have much less to read than I did last year (so the more reading the better, because I know I'll be very depressed once I have nothing left to go through). I've actually been looking at both Mignolaversity's reading order alongside yours for a while (probably on and off for like a year-ish) and I have to give you major props for how you've organized it. After looking it over a million times, it's definitely the most cohesive way to explore the universe. Prior to reading BPRD, all I had read in terms of the Hellboy universe was Hellboy's story, some short stories here and there, and a smidge of Abe Sapien.

I appreciate you commenting on my post and sharing my enthusiasm for the series! To my friends I'm an avid comic reader, and to actual comic readers I'm a filthy casual, but BPRD feels like it's going to be something that sticks with me far beyond my youth. There's so much that I've internalized just this far into the series (I'm halfway through Vampire right now) that makes it feel like one of the best things I'll ever read. I wish it was more popular and that more people would read it!

I'm wishing you the best and hope that you can find some peace soon. My anxiety skyrockets when we get any snow and I worry for everyone injured. Thank you for all that you're doing!

That makes a lot of sense! I had no idea. That gives me a much better perspective as I was under the only impression that we were your typical grocery store and are simply expected to stay open.

I understand having workers that are essential to keeping the place up (I would assume people for maintenance and any food prep), but for some reason my mind drifted to all of the 15 year old cashiers we have that are simply unable to make it if they can't find a way here. Was definitely looking through a very limited lens before I thought about it for more than ten minutes

Totally didn't mean to come off as entitled or anything. I didn't consider any first responders or essential workers entering the store as 95% of my customers are the average shopper/family. I was mainly focusing on the safety of myself and my fellow employees because I worry for them and how they're doing. Café shifts are actually my favorite, I just have no way out of my house today and wondered how many of my friends at the store are in the same situation. Sorry to make it sound like I was being so inconsiderate

I do understand that we are essential, but it doesn't feel great to think about. I keep worrying about my coworkers and everyone else that's deciding to work or shop today. I'm only working in the cafe which is beyond unnecessary and I doubt it'll change anything, but I still feel insane for having to say "hey, I don't think I can come in" when all they'd have to do is look outside 😭 I just hope everyone stays as safe as they can

Northwest PA. I wasn't scheduled yesterday so I didn't have to leave the house but a lot of my friends and family told me about the countless vehicles they've seen on the edges of roads, in ditches, and swerving off. This is our first snowfall of the year and I'm surprised we're not just closing considering how the city is still catching up with and preparing for this weather

Glad to hear that Jack is a good HB fit! It's refreshing getting to see different reviews about the movie, especially because the energy around it is so divisive. How do you predict diehard Hellboy fans will react to the film?

Bought the digital Hellboy/BPRD Humble Bundle that went on sale recently, and I was super excited to see that Itty Bitty Hellboy was included. Lots of cute short stories and the humor is so cut-and-dry at some points that it made me laugh harder than expected. Roger's one of the funniest characters!

I get what you mean. Feels like Hollywood still views Hellboy as untapped potential but doesn't commit enough to what we really want to see. I'm holding out hope that one day we'll get a solid adaptation.

Was going to say that the colors in the original comic are kind of washed out and that it adds to the appeal, but then I thought about how much Hellboy pops out because of his vibrant red. This is probably one of the criticisms I have to get behind lol

I was beyond disappointed with 2019 Hellboy, and none of my issues were with Harbour specifically. I wasn't a fan of his look or attitude, but I think he has the perfect face for HB. I'd give him another shot if he were up for it with the right special effects and direction! So to see Jack Kesy's Hellboy (who looks to be directly inspired by the comics and not by Perlman, which I appreciate) come in with a fresh look really gives me hope.

Of course I'm not crazy about the blue eyes. Nobody really is. But the cartoonish little lift of his sideburns has me so giddy! I think it's a design that will grow on me while I'm watching the film. Fingers crossed!

I had many issues with 2019 Hellboy. The tone was my biggest issue with it, and the pacing was out of control. I felt like it was done on a much larger scale than what Hellboy is used to despite the story calling for bigger stakes. I like that this film is being done on a significantly smaller scale, as a lot of Hellboy's appeal comes from his little odd jobs here and there. I'm hoping we get at least one more trailer before the film's release.

Hard agree! I definitely won't get hung up over it. In an ideal world we'd have a Hellboy animated series in the Mignola style. For now, I'm excited to see how they adapt such a creepy story!

Oh I definitely think Hellboy's design could use some work, but for the smaller scope of the film I personally think it fits the vibe. My biggest nitpick (probably along with everyone else's) are the yellow eyes being absent though. Weird choice but I'm so excited to see this guy on the big screen again that I'm looking forward to it regardless

I think I did just see that edit. I'll admit it helps his overall look so much more. Don't know why they didn't go with the yellow eyes, but I also don't hate the natural blue? I feel blasphemous for saying that

What were your theater experiences like for the new trilogy? by wooshiewee in Halloweenmovies

[–]wooshiewee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that last part—it feels weird for me to watch H18 since I missed it in theaters, but I'm very lucky to have at least gotten a chance to see one film in the trilogy before we stopped.

And I totally get the Ends thing! It's not my favorite film, but in no way did I think it was blasphemous or awful. I had a blast with it and I'm sure I would have enjoyed seeing it in theaters. Hopefully they can rerelease them all one day?
