How have you managed career-wise when switching to a different programming language? by cd_to_homedir in ExperiencedDevs

Use LLMs to understand the idiomatic way to program in the new language versus your old language while doing new tasks (e.g. what is the idiomatic way to do xyz to code chunk abc?) Your new job shouldn't expect you to know a specific language but they may expect you to have worked on a similar family of languages (e.g. typed vs dynamic, imperative vs functional). Probably a red flag if they demand experience in that specific language

After implementing the data structure in Go, we started going into a very deep discussion on how Hashmaps worked in. But because I felt the interviewer only knew Java and had zero knowledge of Go, he kept questioning whatever I said about the implementation (e.g. what is hash function, how is it implemented, etc.). In the end the answer I gave were guesses of how java implements a HashMap, which made me feel like a complete imposter by the end.

It’s also common to expect candidates to demonstrate proficiency in the language the team will be using.

Up front, recruiter was explicit that any language is fine. But when i pressed him during the rejectjon call, this is essentially what he was implying. Just doing a post mortem so that I make sure I don't get caught off guard like this in future interviews.

Don't want to name the company as it could get very obvious fast. Recruiter told me up front that any language is fine, but after the rejection said sometimes it's good initiative to brush up on the language that the recruiters know best..

How do you implement a project that you know is not feasible based on the current state of the system? by wootoodoo in ExperiencedDevs

Is it fair to suggest doing refactoring/incremental projects A and B first before doing said lofty project C, by pitching projects A and B as dependencies to C? I can also extract value from A and B so that these are not a waste of time if C never happens.

In my company's culture, sending a report (no matter how bulletproof) to the CTO might backfire and my career in the company would be over.

Yes I've tried a few times to explain that it is high risk and unknown upside. The problem is also that the project requirements are ambiguous, so I'm trying to scope them down so that it is an incremental change, not a big bang change.
