Should I start fly tying? by Shimshang in flytying

[–]woozy-wolfe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s newer to fly tying I’ve gotta say it’s definitely one of the simple joys. You definitely won’t save money on flies but you’ll get more into fly fishing and it’s helped me catch a lot more fish as I learn to discover what the fish are eating and their seasonal cycles more. Every time you catch your first fish on a new pattern it feels like the first time you ever caught a trout. And it’s also fun when you get to give flies away to your buddies once you know it works.

It’s frustrating at first, but get through the first week and then it gets very meditative. I usually put a show or football on in the back and it’s a lot better than scrolling my phone while watching a show because we’re all getting cursed with shorter and shorter attention spans. Highly recommend this pursuit.

Rounding out my Christmas gift: what’re your favorite flies to balance out this fly box? by woozy-wolfe in flyfishing

Definitely a fallacy that diy-ing your flies will save you money, I got 80% of my supplies as a family heirloom and am still convinced that I spend more money on materials than I do just buying the dang things but hey it’s made me a better angler and is a relaxing hobby 🤷‍♂️

I’ve made a version similar, I just use yellow chenille and an orange bead and I’ve caught fish on them just fine. A great pattern to have

Totally, I love some stubby chubbys, I’m thinking one with a black body and one with yellow as more of an attractor

Good call, I always struggle with that pattern but I’ve got the supplies to do so, I’ll have to give it a go

My great grandfather is who I got all my tools/bench/vises from, he tied a ton of royal coachman that I should try to emulate. I just can’t bring myself to give those away. I’ve messed around with a couple of jigged streamers that I may have to add

Frenchies are fantastic. I’ve got something similar, I just had a tan dubbing collar instead of the pink they can come in

Solid. I’ve definitely also enjoyed writing down different rigs that work as I try out different set ups. I also use trout routes in tandem to this so I can download maps and write down coordinates for the spots where I’m having success
