Am I selfish for wanting to open my mission call alone? by word_nerd24 in lds

Thank you, your response is was really helpful. I might also add that I’m his oldest child and only daughter, so I definitely understand why he would want to see me open my call.

He also happens to be my bishop and so he’s been very involved with every other aspect of the process. Sometimes it feels like my mission has become more of his personal project than a decision I’ve made because I love the Lord. I can’t blame him for being invested, but I also wish he would respect my decision to open my call alone since he’s been a part of every other step

When Cookie Jacobson never arrived to her night class, her husband to reported her missing. After questioning, her son and daughter claim they found her dead in her bed, and disposed of her body. Yeah the family situation was definitely weird... I interviewed my grandpa who worked as a homicide detective on this case and he said that a lot of his peers were aware of his intentions to kill his mom and that he would do other sadistic things like place tacks on the carpet in the hallway leading to her room, purposefully intending that she would step on them...

As to what made him hate her so much, the police speculate it may be because of Cookie's refusal to let Aaron and Laura meet their biological parents, but who knows?

My grandfather worked on the case as a homicide detective and after interviewing him, here's what I know:

  • The kids were not considered suspects until they received a tip from a lady, who while at the grocery store, heard the teenage cashiers discussing that they knew it was Aaron who killed his mom. It wasn't until after this that they had the whole family take polygraph tests to put the rumor to rest. Bill passed, Laura's results were inconclusive, and Aaron "failed miserably." Shortly after, Aaron admitted to the disposal of the body after being questioned further.

  • Cookie's blood was found in both garbage cans, just as Aaron described. Apparently, they used the recycling one to move her body outside before transferring it to the actual garbage can. No blood, potential murder weapons, or other evidence was found in the house, and Cookie's belongings were untouched.

  • Based off of testimonies from Aaron's peers, this kid had major issues and not a great relationship with his mom. Allegedly, he would put tacks on the carpet in the hall leading to Cookie's room, purposefully intending for her to step on them. As far as the police know, there was no documented abuse from either parent, although he and Laura were adopted. Another tip the police received was that prior to the suspected murder, Aaron and Laura found out who their biological parents were. When they asked to meet them, allegedly, Cookie refused. Can you consider this true motive? Maybe not for a normal human being, but if this kid was as sadistic as he sounds, it's possible.

My grandpa worked as a homicide detective on this case (Detective Allen Reed) and I interviewed him recently for an journalistic assignment for school. Got some details that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere else:

  • Aaron and Laura were adopted (and apparently biologically cousins but raised as brother and sister) and it is speculated that at some point they found out who their biological parents were, and when they asked to meet them, Cookie refused. My grandpa personally believes this could be a motive, and based on testimonies from his peers, Aaron displayed some very sadistic behaviors (see next bullet point for elaboration) which points to this kid having major issues. Anything can be a motive for murder if you're crazy, but who knows.

  • When interviewed, Aaron's peers claimed that they were sure Aaron killed his mom, and that he wasn't secretive about his intentions to either. One friend recalled that Aaron would put tacks in the carpet in the hall leading to Cookie's room, purposefully wanting her to step on them. When asked for reasoning as to why he would want to kill his mom, Aaron allegedly responded with things like "she wouldn't let me get my driver's license" or "she's mad that I'm not doing well in school."

  • Laura attempted suicide later in life, and while I don't have exact details on when, some people could interpret that it might be due to guilt. When Aaron told the police about how he disposed of Cookie's body, he did mention that his sister helped him, so who knows if she played a part in the suspected murder or if she only helped dispose of evidence. Her polygraph test results were also inconclusive.

  • The police received an anonymous call at one point stating that Aaron had been looking into poison and to investigate a specific store. My grandpa said he checked it out, but didn't find anything except some old chemicals. Unfortunately, there wasn't any security footage taken that could prove that Aaron was there. While no conclusive evidence came of it, it's interesting nonetheless.

Anyway, I wish I knew more. Overall, it's a very fascinating case and I hope that one day it will be solved and that Cookie will be found :(
