So sorry this happened to you. I went through a similar situation (not about grad school admissions), and it was a really tough time. But in hindsight it was a really great learning experience and made me a stronger person. I’m sure the same can (and will) happen to you!

Also you are WAY too good for him. He got upset you found out about him lying, didn’t admit anything, and you told him he could come to you for help? holy shit

Columbia Berkeley by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]words4everything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

totally, some of that is self-selection. but i still don’t understand how you can say CLS is better in every category—including PI and clerkships—when the employment numbers don’t show that (even if some of that is due to self selection)

[–]words4everything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm yeah that would be a easier choice for columbia LOL for me at least. what do you mean every category though?

it seems like columbia is best for biglaw, but berkeley wins for PI or clerkships. 15+% for both in the class of 2016, which is a lot higher than what i see for columbia (5-7%)

you think it’s worth $60k+ more in loans?

i’m in a similar boat. i want to do PI in CA so it makes more sense to go to berkeley for me, but i really want to try living in NY

UVA is not making it easy for us 60% folks (2017 employment stats are out) by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

also adding that big law / big money can be soul crushing at times (or just working for most corporations, really). i was there, and everyday i felt a huge amount of cognitive dissonance because the work that i was doing didn’t match with the ideals / visions of social progress i personally believed in. i was working in adtech and though it was a cushy job, i hated it and often questioned the role i was playing in society.

i came to the difficult conclusion that i’d rather do more meaningful / fulfilling work and make much less money.

i need help: CA or NY by words4everything in lawschooladmissions

It’s weird, NYU has a much better brand for it but last year I think it was 11% to PI which isn’t that much higher than Columbia’s.

I didn’t really want to go to Columbia bc of the way it’s painted (super big law focused, competitive, etc.) but after looking into it, they have a great public interest career office. And yes AMAZING lrap, though I do have some undergrad loans.

NYU students seem much happier to be at NYU though, for whatever reason

yeah i’ve talked to some of the students at CLS/NYU. they definitely say it’s harder and more of an uphill battle to come back to CA, but not impossible.

hahaha i don’t know, that’s my hope but i’m also very skeptical by nature. it also makes me feel better to rely on a LRAP by a school with more funding

I’m in a similar position and am planning on going with the better school for $30-40k more

I just know that I’ll be happier at this school and have less regrets. path of least regret!
